Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge was established under the auspices of the National University of Ireland, Galway in 2004, to support the sustainable development of Irish-medium courses, research activity and other services. An tAcadamh works in co-operation with faculties, departments and other university offices to develop the range and number of programmes that are provided through the medium of Irish on campus and in the Acadamh’s Gaeltacht centres in An Cheathrú Rua, Carna and Gaoth Dobhair.
An tAcadamh provides innovative, pioneering and flexible programmes at third and fourth level in interdisciplinary areas that are considered to be of specific importance to the sustainable development of the Gaeltacht and the Irish language nationally.
These are as follows: Communication Studies; Language Planning; the Performing Arts; Information Technology; Education Studies; Translation Studies; Applied Irish; Business, Administration and Management Studies and Community Development. These courses are unique to NUI Galway and include a Masters programme in Language Planning, the first of its kind in Europe.
