Directions
The Department of Accountancy & Finance is located to the north of the main campus, in the St. Anthony's Building on the banks of the Corrib River in Upper Newcastle. Below are directions on how to reach us.
By car
Approaching from West Galway (N59)
- On entering Galway, you will pass through traffic lights in Dangan (Westwood Hotel is to your right, and IDA business park on your left)
- Continue on, passing Corrib Village (Baile na Coiribe) on your left. After another 300m, about 150m short of the next traffic lights, you will see a building with Georgian windows on your left, bounded by a stone wall and mature trees. Enter through the gateway, and the Cairnes Building (formerly known as St. Anthony's) is on your left.
- If you are here to meet a member of staff, please see the
staff profiles page for details of office locations.
Approaching from all other main routes (N6, N17, N18, N83, or N84)
- On approaching Galway, follow signs for Clifden N59.
- When you reach the Bodkin roundabout (next to the entrance to the Galway Shopping Centre), continue in the direction of Clifden N59. After crossing the river Corrib, you will come to a crossroads (next to Statoil garage) - there is no right turn allowed here. Instead, continue 200m through the crossroads to the next roundabout, do a full turn and come back to the crossroads, then turn left.
- Proceed slowly for about 150m, and you will see a gateway on your right through two stone pillars
- Enter through the gateway, and the Cairnes Building (formerly known as St. Anthony's) is on your left. If you are here to meet a member of staff, please see the
staff profiles page for details of office locations.
By public transport
- Galway city is served by
train services from Dublin (via Midlands and East Galway), as well as
public and private bus services from all parts of Ireland. The normal drop-off point for all these services is Galway city centre (in or near Eyre Square), though some of the private bus services will drop-off at Newcastle if so requested.
- From Galway city centre, you can take a bus or taxi to Upper Newcastle. If taking a taxi, go to the rank at the top of Eyre Square and ask for the NUI Galway Cairnes Building (formerly known as St. Anthony's) in Upper Newcastle. If taking a bus, take the No. 4 Bus Éireann service to Newcastle from Eyre Square - there are different bus stops for each bus route, so check that you are waiting at the correct stop. Also, each bus route travels in both directions, so make sure you are taking the No. 4 bus in the direction of Newcastle, not Merlin Park. For local bus timetables, see
Bus Éireann's Web site. The timetable for route number 4 is at:
www.buseireann.ie/site/your_journey/printed_timetable_pdfs/city/galway4.pdf
- From the city centre, cross the Salmon Weir bridge and branch to your right, proceeding past Galway cathedral to the top of University Road (you will pass the entrance to the South Campus of NUI Galway on your right). At the traffic lights at the top of University Road (directly opposite the hospital entrance), take a right turn and proceed along Newcastle Road. After passing through two sets of traffic lights in quick succession, you will come to a third set of lights at a crossroads (Statoil garage to your right). Proceed directly through the crossroads for about 150m, and you will see a gateway on your right through two stone pillars. (If you are taking the No. 4 bus, you should dismount at this stop).
- Enter through the gateway, and the Cairnes Building (formerly known as St. Anthony's) is on your left. If you are here to meet a member of staff, please see the
staff profiles page for details of office locations.
