The Translation Service

About us

An tSeirbhís Aistriúcháin (The Translation Service) forms part of Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge in the National University of Ireland, Galway. We provide a translation and language consultancy/advice service to the University, ensuring it can fulfill its legislative responsibilities to bilingualism.  

Guidelines for using the Translation Service

Please follow these procedures if you require an tSeirbhís Aistriúcháin to translate or proofread your document:

1. All documents to be translated or proofread must be sent in Word format only to aistriuchannuigalway.ie
2. A request form will be sent to you. Request form also available here.
3. Complete the form and return to us at aistriuchannuigalway.ie 
4. Your request will then be recorded and given a specific job number.
5. One of the translators will contact you should there be a query in relation to your request. two translators work on each job.
6. Your request will be carried out as soon as possible and returned when it is translated and proofread.
7. It is the client's responsibility to ensure formatting corresponds with the English version.

Conditions

• An tSeirbhís Aistriúcháin prioritizes translation work as follows:
          (A) Material under NUI Galway’s Language Scheme,
          (B) NUI Galway’s legislative responsibilities under the Official Languages Act 2003,
          (C) NUI Galway’s responsibilities under the Universities Act 1998,
          (D) Requests under the University’s policy of an exemplary bilingual campus.
• A high quality translation is a meticulous process; when planning bilingual material, please include adequate time for the provision of the translation.
• An tSeirbhís Aistriúcháin must be given at least 48 hrs notice before hand of urgent requests. No request will be completed the same day.
• To ensure we have received your request, please use the Request read receipt facility on your email.
• The Irish version should appear first in bilingual material. Often, people read the English version (e.g. emails sent to All Staff) before realising it has been translated. If the Irish version appears first, those who can read it will, those who cannot will continue to the English version.
• If material is sent out in English only the translation request will be cancelled.
• An tSeirbhís Aistriúcháin provides a proofreading service only to sections providing courses through the medium of Irish.
• We will not provide a translation service of examination papers or any course material.
