Blackboard

What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. The VLE provides a medium for supporting teaching and learning activities, including assessment and examination. More details about Blackboard.

The Blackboard service owner is the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT). Staff who wish to register a Blackboard module or learn more about using Blackboard for teaching are advised to contact blackboardnuigalway.ie for more information go online to http://www.nuigalway.ie/blackboard/.

What is the service provided by Information Solutions and Services?

Information Solutions and Services provide technical support for the Blackboard VLE platform and account creation in tandem with student registration and staff HR processes.

Who can use the service?

Technical support is available to all registered students and to staff who are currently on the NUI Galway payroll (excluding retired staff).

Availability

• Blackboard is available 24x7 from on and off campus 
  
  
• For technical support queries, contact the  Service Desk (Tel. x5777 eMail servicedesknuigalway.ie) from 09:15 to 17:00 (Monday – Friday)

Prerequisites required for the service

Students
Students must be currently registered to access the Blackboard service. Students log in to Blackboard using their standard User ID and password (i.e. Campus Account credentials).

Staff
Staff must be currently on the NUI Galway payroll (excludes retired staff). Staff log in to Blackboard using their existing staff ID and password (i.e. the same credentials used for NUI Galway staff email).

Suggested Computer Requirements

Windows users

• Pentium PC with Windows 2000 or XP
• 800 x 600 monitor resolution
• A broadband connection is preferable but if there are no large file downloads, a dial-up connection (56k modem or better) should be sufficient
• Internet Explorer 6 or 7 or Firefox 2
  Note: Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3 are not supported for the version of Blackboard at NUI Galway
• Ensure JavaScript and cookies are enabled in your web browser
• Java Run Time Environment v.1.6.07 (or higher) is required
  Note: The “full” virtual classroom and equation editor requires the Java 1.4.x  (or higher) plugin

Macintosh users

• System 10.3 or later
• 800 x 600 monitor resolution
• A broadband connection is preferable but if there are no large file downloads, a dial-up connection (56k modem or better) should be sufficient
• Safari 1.3 or above or Firefox 2
  Note: Firefox 3 is not supported for the version of Blackboard at NUI Galway
• Ensure JavaScript and cookies are enabled in your web browser
• Java Run Time Environment v.1.6.07 (or higher) is required
  Note: The “full” virtual classroom and equation editor requires the Java 1.4.x  (or higher) plugin
