When is my StudentMail account created?
Your StudentMail account is created within one working day after registration.
Does my StudentMail account expire?
If your account is inactive for 365 days, it will expire and inbox contents will be deleted.
What if I've forgotten my email password?

Can I have a secondary address on my mail account?
No. It is not possible to setup a secondary address for an account on the StudentMail service.
A secondary address is where email sent to another address is also routed to your mailbox.
Can I edit my display name in the Student Global Address List?
No. It is not possible to edit the way your name is displayed in the StudentMail Global Address List. The student name appears displayed "Surname, Firstname" as listed at registration.
Will my StudentMail account remain available after I leave NUI Galway?
No.
It is recommended that students approaching the end of their course do not use their NUI Galway email address as a contact address for applications for jobs, courses or further studies as the StudentMail account will cease to receive email once you are no longer a registered student at NUI Galway.
The potential to offer email for life for alumni is being explored however, there is currently no specific proposal in this respect.
When a student's status changes in the University Students Records System to indicate that they have left NUI Galway, then
the StudentMail account is disabled. In practice, the account remains available with limited functionality for a period of time. Details of this limited functionality are as follows:

What is included with the student e-mail account?
The account is very similar to a Microsoft Hotmail account and includes 10GB quota for email, contacts and calendar.
What other services are included in StudentMail?
Additional services include Windows Live SkyDrive, Windows Live Messenger, Office Live Workspace, Windows Live Alerts, Windows Live SharedView, Windows Live Spaces and Windows Live Events.
Can students access StudentMail using an Apple Macintosh?
Yes, Macintosh users can access StudentMail using a Firefox or Safari browser. Browsers other than Internet Explorer 7 allow acess to Outlook Web Access Light which has fewer features than the Premium version.
Macintosh users can also access mail from Mozilla Thunderbird, Entourage or Mail for Mac OSX.
Can I check the status of the StudentMail service?
There is an online facility to check the status of the StudentMail service.
How can I access the Help feature?
You can get context-based help when viewing your mail on the web by clicking the
icon at the top-right of the mail screen.
What are the keyboard shortcuts for StudentMail?

The mail quota is 10GB.
How can I view the mailbox size (quota used)?
You can check how much quota remaining on your account. When viewing your mail, click Mail in the StudentMail navigation pane and point (rest the mouse on) to your name at the top of the Mail folder list.
A window appears (similar to the example shown below) that shows the current space used in your mailbox and your mailbox limits.
What happens when you near the mailbox quota?
When the mailbox reaches 9GB, you will get an automatic warning message that you are nearing your mailbox quota limit.
When the mailbox reaches 9.9GB, you will no longer be able to send messages.
When the mailbox reaches 10GB, you will no longer be able to receive messages.
Can email accidentally deleted from StudentMail be recovered?
Deleted emails are moved to the Deleted Items folder and remain in that folder until they are either individually deleted or the Deleted Items folder is emptied.
If mail is then deleted from the Deleted Items folder, it cannot be restored.
The student may use email client software such as Microsoft Outlook to keep data backed up for individual archival and data recovery purposes.
Can students search their email?

How can I verify that my message was sent?
You can add a Delivery and/or Read receipt to your message before it is sent -
instructions available.
After the message is sent, you can view Message Tracking by clicking
Options
in the message toolbar.
Click
Profile and then click the
Message Tracking tab.
Double-click on a message to view the delivery report.
If the message status is
Transferred, this means that the message has successfully left the StudentMail system.
If you do not receive a bounced message back, then your message was received.
Can I create a distribution group in the Student Global Address List?
No. Distribution groups which appear in the StudentMail Global Address List (GAL) are referred to as Public Groups. Students cannot create Public Groups in StudentMail. Note that you can create a Distibution list in your own StudentMail contacts to send the same message to multiple contacts without having to enter each contact separately in the message.
How can I use mail clients, such as Outlook to connect to StudentMail?
Update September 2011: Setup is currently not working for the full-featured
Microsoft Outlook mail client,
other mail clients,
indows Mobile or ActiveSync device or an
iPhone. ISS are working to resolve this issue.

Can I use Microsoft Outlook 2003 to connect to StudentMail?
No. Please note that Microsoft only supports the 2007 version of Outlook for StudentMail.
Where can I find details of the incoming and outgoing email servers for the StudentMail service?
It is recommended that you choose the IMAP protocol when setting up mail clients. The incoming IMAP server is outlook.comCan I access StudentMail by using Outlook Mobile Access or Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)?
No. StudentMail doesn't support Outlook Mobile Access or WAP. StudentMail supports Exchange ActiveSync, POP, and IMAP to access and synchronize a mailbox with a mobile device. There are third-party applications that add Exchange ActiveSync, POP, or IMAP capabilities to mobile devices that don't natively support them.
Note: Information Solutions and Services recommends that you choose the IMAP protocol where possible.
Why can't I logout when using Safari on the Macintosh?
There is a known issue with StudentMail when using Safari on the Macintosh. Clicking the Log Off button does not work. Instead, you must close down the Safari browser to exit your email.
Will I receive advertising on my email account?
While you are a currently registered student, banner ads for third-party products and services will not appear on the web interface for your StudentMail account.
Microsoft reserves the right to display information about Microsoft products and services, but, of course, recognises the need to do so in a manner that is tasteful and not overbearing. For example, Microsoft may opt to show tips and tricks to enhance usage of Windows Live services or occasionally display information about special Microsoft offers for students.
For all other Microsoft services e.g. SkyDrive, Live Messenger, you will see advertisements that are age appropriate.
