Where employees habitually use "display screen equipment" (typically computers or microfiches), as a significant part of their normal work, they may be effected by physical and/or visual discomfort if their workstation is inappropriately set up or used. Legislation was enacted in 1993 and updated in 2007 which set down certain requirements for eye and eye sight testing for such employees as follows:
Employees are entitled to an eye and eyesight test prior to commencing computer/display screen equipment work, at regular intervals thereafter or if an employee experiences visual difficulties which may be due to computer/display screen equipment work.
The University has availed of a computer-based vision screening service, to assess employee's eyesight with respect to computer/display screen equipment work, on site. Persons wishing to avail of this scheme must first verify their entitlement to do so, by completing the application form.
