The modular programme in Science & Technology Studies covers a broad curriculum in the area of Science and Engineering and allows students to specialise by choosing from a range of electives. These elective modules are also available as independent awards which students may take for the purposes of up-skilling or retraining in the area of Medical Device Science and Environmental Sustainability.
Who is the programme intended for?
These specialist diploma awards in Medical Device Science and Environmental Sustainability are particularly suitable for students requiring medium-term, up-skilling for career advancement or for those interested in focused study in a subject of personal or topical interest.
Programme content
Each stream consists of four modules and a related project, the topic of which is chosen by the candidate in consultation with their supervisor.

Entry requirements
Applicants for entry to the specialist diploma programmes should be in receipt of the Diploma in Science & Technology Studies or a related Diploma, or otherwise prove that they satisfy the prerequisites of each of the modules in the elective stream they wish to apply for as laid out in the programme documentation.

Applicants for entry to the specialist diploma programmes should be in receipt of the Diploma in Science & Technology Studies or a related Diploma at level 7, or otherwise prove that they satisfy the prerequisites of each of the modules in the elective stream they wish to apply for as laid out in the programme documentation.
Assessment
Assessment is through assignments, written exams and in some cases practical laboratory. Exams take place at the end of each semester. All modules from the programme will be individually assessed.
Duration & attendance requirements
The programme is delivered by blended learning on a part-time basis over one year. Candidates will receive learning materials in both online and in hard-copy format for each module. Materials will be specifically designed for independent study and will be supplemented by supporting reading material and interactive learning resources where appropriate. The programme requires attendance on campus for approximately 10 hours per module, mainly on Saturdays.
Annual fee
€1,800 per Diploma. This fee is subject to a yearly review.
A number of scholarships will be available for applicants who have recently become unemployed (since January 2008), and wish to update their skills and knowledge by participating in this programme. Scholarships will constitute a 50% contribution to programme fees. A separate application process will be required.
