NUI Galway and the Western Theological Institute combine to offer this programme in Galway city and in a number of outreach locations. The programme is designed for those who wish to obtain a qualification that will build upon their experience in parish and community development and bring this into dialogue with theology and the behavioural sciences. The programme helps participants to study and develop a critical understanding of their faith. The programme also helps participants to understand the community development initiatives that are required to transform their local community and it facilitates their own personal development, empowering them to initiate change in their own community.
The programme is suitable for people who are actively involved in parish work within their own communities or with community development on a general level. It is also geared towards educators who have an interest in Theology and who may be involved in the delivery of training within a community setting.
The programme is divided into eight modules and is designed to be taught as an integrated whole. Each module from the human sciences is taught simultaneously with the theological module which contextualises it, as follows:

There are a maximum of 25 places on the programme per venue. Admission is on the basis of a written application and an interview. Criteria for acceptance include an ability to engage with the programme material in an open, critical and analytical manner, as well as a capacity for local leadership and/or commitment to social development.

Normally, the modules are taught one evening per week over 2 years during the regular University semesters, from late September to May. Modules may occasionally be taught at the weekend. The programme is taught at a number of outreach locations. To date, it has been taught in Galway, Ballina, Ballaghaderreen (County Roscommon) and Sligo. The fee for the programme is currently € 825 per year. This fee is subject to a yearly review.
