The programme is a four year, part-time evening degree programme in the Faculty of Arts. Students are awarded a Diploma in Arts upon successful completion of the first two years of the programme and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) on completion of the four year cycle.
The degree programme aims to:
Provide students with the opportunity to pursue a particular specialism(s) to degree level according to personal and educational interests.
Develop students’ analytical and problem-solving skills that are appropriate for decision-making roles and for personal or professional competencies.Offer students the opportunity of pursuing further study on completing an initial Diploma or Degree programme.Offer students the prospect of enhancing their career opportunities on attaining a relevant qualification.
Who is the programme intended for?
The Diploma and Degree programme is intended for those who have an interest in the humanities area or who require a generalist academic qualification for either career or personal development purposes. The programme also caters for those who intend to progress to further studies.
Programme content
The BA programme is devised on a modular, credit basis. Each module carries a specific number of credits. The maximum number of credits that a student can attain in each year is 45 credits. A Diploma in Arts is awarded on attaining 90 credits and a Bachelor of Arts degree on attaining 180 credits.
Each of the main subject areas of the BA offers a number of modules over the four year degree programme. There are generally three to four subject areas on offer as part of the programme in each cycle. Applicants are encouraged to choose a minimum of two to three subjects in the core areas during the first two years of the programme (Diploma Cycle) and then specialise in one or two of these subjects during the Degree cycle, in years three and four. Subject areas in the 2008 – 2012 BA programmes are History, English, Information Technology and French.

Entry requirements
Students under 21 years of age must meet the University’s minimum entry (matriculation) requirements, which include a pass in at least six subjects (including Irish, English and another language) at the Leaving Certificate Examination, with at least grade C3 in two subjects on the higher course and at least grade D3 (ordinary or higher course) in the remaining four subjects.
Students aged 21 years or over by 1 January of the year of admission to the programme may matriculate on the grounds of mature years alone, that is, you do not need to meet the University’s minimum entry requirements.

Duration/attendance requirements
The programme is offered on a semester basis. Each semester comprises 12 weeks of teaching followed by examinations. Semester 1 commences in early September and ends, including examinations, in late December. Semester 2 commences during mid-January and ends, including examinations, in mid-May. Students on the BA programme attend lectures three evenings per week for up to 3 hours, with the specific evening varying, depending on the modules chosen. Occasional tutorial sessions, also up to 3 hours, may also be delivered on Saturday mornings.
Assessment
All modules on the BA programme are individually assessed. The assessment for each module is conducted during or at the end of teaching in that particular semester. Assessment takes the form of essays, written assignments or presentations during the teaching period and a written examination at the end of the semester.
Award
NUI Diploma in Arts-on accumulating 90 credits at the end of Year 2.
NUI Bachelor of Arts-on accumulating 180 credits at the end of Year 4.
Annual fee
The EU fee is €3,264 per year. This fee is subject to a yearly review.
