The sixth annual Cumann Caoga Bliain Celebrations will take place on
Thursday 17th April at NUI Galway. This event is open to all pre-1958 graduates, especially those who have not previously returned for their 50th Reunion.
This is a great opportunity to return to Galway for reminiscing and catching up with old friends as well as seeing the many developments that have been made to NUI Galway since the 1940s and 1950s,
Last year over 50 alumni and friends returned to their alma mater for this event hosted by the Alumni Office and Prof Ger Hurley, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & External Affairs who presents Cumann Caoga Bliain newcomers with a commemorative certificate.

A reception for alumni working in the media was held on Friday 7th December in the NUI Central Office, Merrion Square, Dublin. The event was hosted by the Alumni Association Board with an introduction by Seán O'Rourke, BA 1977, RTÉ.
This reception proved to be a great networking opportunity for media alumni and it is envisaged that another similar event will be hosted in the coming months. On November 7, 2007, the Galway University Foundation hosted its first fund raising event in New York City. Chaired by NUI Galway graduate Michael Higgins, the event honored Gabriel Byrne and featured a special performance by Camerata Pacifica, a world-renowned chamber music ensemble.
The event attracted 200 friends and graduates of NUI Galway from the United States and Ireland and raised $180,000 toward the development of the Special Collections Department at the James Hardiman Library at NUI Galway.
The Galway University Foundation gratefully acknowledges the efforts of the US Board of Directors and all who supported this successful event.

9 November - Julie McCormack BA 1987 LLB 1989 and Dr Ann Marie Joyce MB, BCh, BAO 1997 of the New England Chapter Committee, were joined by Professor Ger Hurley, VP for Strategic Initiatives and External Affairs, JB Terrins, Director of Alumni Relations and over 30 graduate and friends of NUI Galway at a reception to launch the New England Alumni Chapter. Many new acquaintances and connections were made and re-established and the Chapter’s plans for activity in 2008 announced to the group - watch this space… The night was certainly owned by NUI Galway as the group moved on to the British and Irish Graduates in Boston Ball, sponsored this year by NUI Galway Alumni Association.

The 2nd annual Corrib Medical Alumni Network Banquet, hosted by University President Dr Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh and Professor Michael Kerin, took place on Saturday, 10th November in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin. This was a wonderful occasion with a champagne reception followed by a four-course meal with music by ’The Velvet Lounge Band’. It proved to be a great opportunity for reunion and camaraderie with fellow medical alumni.
This event was open to all individuals and aimed to promote the newly established Corrib Medical Alumni Network, which raises funds for the teaching & research facilities at the Clinical Science Institute, NUI Galway.
If you are interested in learning more about the Clinical Science Institute or how you can become involved with the Corrib Medical Alumni Network please contact Catherine Leenane, Galway University Foundation at 091 492972 or email

President Ó Muircheartaigh led a senior delegation from the University to China in November 2007. The occasion was marked by the official launch of the NUI Galway Beijing Alumni Chapter. A group of 60 alumni, friends and partner university representatives joined the event which was hosted by His Excellency Ambassador Declan Kelleher on November 19th in the Irish Embassy, Beijing.
Galway has amongst the largest number of graduates in China of any Irish university, many working as senior academics in the Engineering faculties of China’s top universities. The network of graduates will be using the newly established Chapter structure to reinforce their long-standing support of the alma mater by strengthening the University’s networks in China, facilitating more research partnerships and academic exchanges, and assisting with the Universities recruitment strategy in China.
