Hundreds of graduates from ’78 and ’79 flocked to their
alma mater on November 22nd to enjoy what was a truly magical and fun-packed extravaganza. From 3pm until the early hours of the following morning, there followed one spectacular event after another. The ever-popular Professor Hubert McDermott started proceedings with a humourous lecture on ’Stress Management for the Middle-aged Graduate’. He had the audience dripping wet with laughter as he ended his talk with a look at some of the answers that appeared on the English examination papers of 1978 and 1979. The standing ovation that Hubert received was spontaneous and heart-felt.
MC for the day, Maria O’Malley, introduced Brendan ’Speedie’ Smith who unveiled some remarkable photographs of student life in the late 1970s ranging from activities in campus buildings long since demolished, such as Terrapin 5 and the original ’Smokie Joe’s canteen, to the shenanigans of the Salthill nightclub scene. He also outlined his plans for the further development of the Reunion website at
