The annual NUI Galway Alumni Awards will be presented at the University’s seventh annual Gala Banquet, which will take place at the Radisson SAS Hotel on Saturday 4th March 2006.
This year’s Banquet will celebrate the inaugural year of the University’s International Scholarship Programme which is part of NUI Galway’s mission in international education. The event will focus on the University’s role as an international force for change in improving educational opportunities for students from developing countries.
The centrepiece of the Gala Banquet is the presentation of the Alumni Awards, which celebrate the life-long value of an NUI Galway education and recognise individual excellence and achievements among the more than 50,000 graduates worldwide.
Dr Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh, President of NUI Galway said: "The achievements of the distinguished graduates which we honour each year through the Alumni Awards programme underscore the excellence of an NUI Galway education. This year, the high calibre of Award winners in each of the Award categories reflects the outstanding success of our graduates across many diverse spheres of public and professional life. These outstanding alumni serve as an inspiration for our current students and are excellent global ambassadors for their alma mater."
Alumni Awards will be presented to the following:
The University offers a wide range of graduate level Diploma programmes, Masters programmes, and Doctoral research degrees in each Faculty. With almost one quarter of all registered NUI Galway students currently pursuing further studies, the University is committed to continuing to improve the range and quality of its postgraduate studies. A Postgraduate Studies Fair will be held on Monday 6 February 2006 (1.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.) in the main Sports Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn (Student Centre), and is a great opportunity to find out more about full-time and part-time postgraduate opportunities. If you do attend, please introduce yourself to Valerie Leahy, Postgraduate Admissions Officer. See www.nuigalway.ie/postgrad or www.nuigalway.ie/careersfor further details.
The inaugural NUI Galway ’Buy-a-Book Day’ takes place on Thursday 9th March, 2006 in the Aula Maxima, where an exciting and diverse range of books will be on sale to University staff, students and the general public. The proceeds from ’Buy a Book Day’ will be shared – half will be donated to international, national and local charities through the University’s United Charities Group, and the other half used to purchase an item of interest for the Special Library Collection at the James Hardiman Library.
Highlights of the day will include a sale of rare books and signed copies of works by leading Irish authors and an end-of-day bargain clearance to ensure that all stock is sold.
Staff, students and alumni are asked to donate books (all categories accepted) for the 'Buy-a-Book Day' - books will be accepted at the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway on Friday 3rd, Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th March from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Further details on ’Buy a Book Day’ can be obtained by contacting Dr. Jim Duggan.
2005 saw Galway's student radio station FLIRT FM (an acronym of Fully Licensed Independent Radio Transmission) celebrate ten years broadcasting. To highlight this milestone the NUI Galway Alumni Association in conjunction with FLIRT FM and the NUI Galway Radio Society are holding a series of events to mark this achievement including a reunion dinner for former volunteers (Saturday 25th March) extended broadcasting and a series of talks and workshops on community radio.
"Our aim is to mark the last ten years," says organiser and founding station manager Andrew Ó Baoill, "and to recognise that Flirt FM is a living and constantly evolving entity. Our celebrations will balance and combine the reunion and reminiscences of former volunteers and contributions to the continued growth and development of the station."
Former volunteers have been busy unearthing recordings of Flirt FM programmes, some of which will be re-aired and incorporated into documentary footage - promising a retrospective not only of Flirt FM but of many university events and personalities from the past decade.
Those interested in attending the celebrations, or getting involved with the alumni group can contact the station

'What do you imagine when you think of ’Ireland’?'
'Tin whistles!'
'Cows!'
'Hurling – Seán Óg de hAilpín!'
'Eminem – he lives in Dublin!'
These are the responses of some second-class pupils of Scoil San Phroinsias, Tirellan, during workshops on the theme 'What is Ireland?' Over 50 students articulated their idea of what ’Ireland’ means to them through words and art on Thursday 26 January and will continue their exploration of individual and national identity over the coming week.
The facilitators of the workshops, young alumni of NUI Galway, were delighted with the energy and imaginations in which these young citizens engaged with the question posed. One particular boy declared, bewildered, that he didn't know where he was from, while others were surprised at how many countries share green in their flags!
Declan Heery, David Russell, and Martina Callanan are all BA graduates from 2003-2005. As graduates of the prestigious Washington-Ireland Program for Service and Leadership they are committed to demonstrating their passion for active citizenship and public service.
From January 26 to February 12 2006 a provocative series of events aims to bring together people from all sections of society to explore their sense of what ’Ireland’ and ’Irishness’ means.
