Fáilte chuig eagrán an tSamhraidh de e-nuachtlitir na gcéimithe, bhí an bhliain acadúil seo chaite níos gnóthaí ná riamh agus tá cur síos ar chuid de na heachtraí son eagrán seo.
Welcome to the summer edition of Alumni Links. The academic year just passed has been busier than ever and this edition has an update on some of the activities.
The Alumni Association Board had a particularly busy year and I would like to thank the outgoing Chairperson, Dr. Fidelma Dunne, and the outgoing Vice-Chairperson, Catherine Hickey Ó Maoláin, for their excellent stewardship of the association. Thanks to them, the Alumni Association has become more and more involved in the University Community through Career Connect, Access, ALIVE and many other initiatives. Congratulations to the newly elected Chairperson (Mike Gaffney), Vice-Chairperson (Eamonn Hegarty), and Treasurer (John Loftus). I look forward to working with them and the board in the new academic year. The new Board wishes to recruit new members and would welcome suggestions.
The University recently approved the procurement of a new alumni database system. This will allow us to vastly improve communications with all alumni. The new €40 million Sports Centre is on track to open in Spring ’08 and the new €60 million Engineering Building has been submitted for planning. These are part of the University's €400 million "Campus of the Future" capital programme.
There are lots of interesting reunions coming up, not least is the reunion of former Presidents of the Students' Union, many of whom are now leaders in the political and legal professions - more about that in future bulletins.
Best wishes for the summer. If you are back in Galway for a visit, be sure and drop in to our Alumni Office.
New job? Addition to the family? Moved house?

This Alumni Reunion Ball is open to everybody who considered themselves a 'Lit&Debber', not just former Auditors or former committee members.
The Alumni Reunion Ball will be an opportunity for:
Current members to say 'Thank You' to the alumni for their participation in the Society – as committee members, as the vocal hecklers in the Kirwan, as members who came and listened.
Past members to reminisce and rejoice in their past times at Lit & Deb and life at UCG / NUI Galway.
Past and present members to connect with the future of the Society.

June 8th, 9th & 10th -
This year’s Reunion Weekend saw the return of alumni from the Class of 1957 who caught up with old friends over a celebration lunch in the Aula Maxima. This was followed by an entertaining talk on ’1957 – the year that was’, after which University President, Dr Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh, welcomed the class into the Cumann Caoga Bliain/Fifty Year Club. A bus tour of a much changed campus concluded the afternoon’s activities. That evening the Class met up for dinner in the Lobster Pot Restaurant of the Galway Bay Hotel in Salthill, and reminisced late into the night.
The ’Through the Years’ Reunion BBQ took place in glorious sunshine on the banks of the River Corrib on Saturday night. Alumni from 1997, 1982, 1977, 1967 and 1957 and the Medical Class of 1962 gathered together to renew acquaintances, fill each other in on their lives and celebrate the common link that they all have, an affinity with NUI Galway or UCG.
A remembrance mass was said for all deceased alumni on Sunday in the Chapel of St Columbanus. The Class of 1957 regrouped for one last time over a farewell lunch some requesting information on their 60th Reunion due to take place in 2017!

July 5th - Over 80 graduates from eight Irish third level institutions braved the inclement weather to attend the Irish University London Summer BBQ. The event took place in Callaghans on Russell Square and was generously sponsored by Invest Northern Ireland.

July 7th - An afternoon's rowing in the sun and a BBQ was enjoyed by all at Henley Royal Regatta, the world's premier rowing event.
The event was organised by the Alumni Association Board, in conjunction with the Gráinne Mhaol rowing club. NUI Galway has a proud history at Henley being Ireland's most successful club there over the past twenty years.
This year commemorated the 20th Anniversary of the Club’s first Henley win which was marked by the 1987 crew rowing over the course during the afternoon tea break in racing that day.

Congratulations to the Medical Class of 2007 and to all graduates from the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Law and Science who were conferred with masters degrees and PhDs in June! Six outstanding individuals from the worlds of business, philanthropy, justice, music and the arts were conferred with honorary degrees from National University of Ireland, Galway on Friday 29 June, 2007.
The conferring marks remarkable achievements and distinctive contributions both nationally and internationally by individuals who have excelled in their fields.
Commenting, Dr. Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh, President of NUI Galway said, It is a great pleasure to welcome such a distinguished group of graduands to NUI Galway to bestow on them the highest honour that the university can confer.
