Welcome to another edition of
Alumni Links. Welcome to JB Terrins, the new Director of Alumni Relations who has taken up his appointment, I wish him well and look forward to an exciting new chapter in alumni affairs in the University.
It has been an exciting period in the life of the University. The inaugural presentation of the Jerome Hynes Award for Best One Act Play, honouring this esteemed graduate's contribution to the world of Arts on the national and international stage, took place as part of the University's annual Múscailt Festival.
The Government has approved a new € 50 million Engineering Building which is the largest capital project on the campus in the history of the University. Planning approval has been obtained for a new Student Sports Centre which will incorporate a 25m swimming pool.
The Táinaiste Mary Harney TD recently opened the new Moyola Building for Nursing and Midwifery Studies, Occupational Therapy, Political Science and Sociology, and Speech and Language Therapy.
The annual Alumni Awards take place on Saturday, March 4th at the University's Gala Banquet.
The annual reunion is now just a few months away and I hope you will be able to join us for this increasingly popular event.
Prof W Gerard Hurley (PhD 1988)
Vice President for Strategic Initiatives & External Affairs
A Chairde,
I am delighted to be on board here at the NUI Galway Alumni Office. It is a busy time to be joining and I've been immediately impressed by the activity and excitement in the greater alumni community surrounding the upcoming Annual Alumni Awards and Gala Banquet.
One of the great strengths of NUI Galway is the affection held for it by its alumni and I look forward to developing and building on this existing relationship. It is my aim to get to meet and know many of you personally so that together we can nurture a revived programme of alumni activities and events with something for everyone and for the good of the University past, present and future.
The Alumni Office door is always open and we warmly welcome any visitors who drop by with ideas or just keep us up to speed on their news.
Best regards,
JB Terrins
NUI Galway warmly welcomes the passing of the University College Galway (Amendment) Bill through all stages of its consideration by Dáil Éireann. This Bill amends the University College Galway Act 1929, an act the provisions of which have applied to all appointments in NUI Galway since 1929.
The University sought an amendment of the Act, as it felt that the restrictions which the Act placed on the recruitment of staff were not helpful in the modern competitive environment in which the University operates. It was also felt that a more positive legislative expression of support and re-enforcement for the University’s commitment to Irish, focussing on actions rather than merely recruitment, was desirable.
Dr Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh, President of NUI Galway said: 'The University welcomes the fact that the Government has recognised, in legislation, the special role and responsibility of NUI Galway in relation to the provision of third level education through Irish. It also embraces the statutory responsibility placed by the Bill on the University to ensure that it fulfils this role. For further information please click here
The Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, TD, opened a new € 22 million health sciences facility at NUI Galway which has the potential to revolutionise the training of health care professionals in Ireland. The new facility brings together a range of disciplines with a shared interest in health and in the broader social and policy factors that impact on healthcare in Ireland.
Áras Moyola brings together the University’s Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Studies, Department of Occupational Therapy, Department of Political Science and Sociology, and Department of Speech and Language Therapy under one roof.

The inaugural NUI Galway ’Buy-a-Book Day’ takes place on Thursday 9th March, 2006 in the Aula Maxima, where an exciting and diverse range of books will be on sale to University staff, students and the general public. The proceeds from ’Buy a Book Day’ will be shared – half will be donated to international, national and local charities through the University’s United Charities Group, and the other half used to purchase an item of interest for the Special Library Collection at the James Hardiman Library.
Highlights of the day will include a sale of rare books and signed copies of works by leading Irish authors and an end-of-day bargain clearance to ensure that all stock is sold.
Staff, students and alumni are asked to donate books (all categories accepted) for the 'Buy-a-Book Day' - books will be accepted at the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway on Friday 3rd, Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th March from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Further details on ’Buy a Book Day’ can be obtained by contacting Dr. Jim Duggan.
In recognition of the outstanding contribution Jerome Hynes, BA 1980, HDip in Ed 1981, LLB 1988, made to the Arts both nationally and internationally as Chief Executive of Wexford Festival Opera and as a member of An Chomhairle Ealaion/The Arts Council, the Alumni Association has named an award for the ’Best One Act Play’ during Múscailt to honour Jerome's memory.
The inaugural Jerome Hynes Award for Best One Act Play, sponsored by the University’s Alumni Association, was presented by Alma Hynes, Jerome's widow on Friday, 24th February 2006 to the cast and crew of
Basin of Myself, an original play written, directed and performed entirely by students. The play was one of ten performed as part of the University's Múscailt Festival.
The presentation piece was created by the renowned sculptor John Coll BSc 1979, winner of last year's Alumni Award for Literature, Communication and the Arts. There will be a public unveiling of a larger commissioned piece also by John Coll located in the Bank of Ireland Theatre at a later date.
The Sixth Annual Alumni Awards will be presented at the University's Annual Gala Banquet on 4th March 2006 at the Radisson SAS Hotel Galway. This year's Alumni Award Winners are:
