Fáilte chuig eagrán eile de e-nuachtlitir na gcéimithe. Mar a druidimuid le deireadh na bliana acadúla, tá réimse mór scéalta suimiúla san eagrán seo.
Welcome to the last edition of Alumni Links before the summer. As we come to the end of a very busy academic year there are plenty of stories to share with you.
The numbers participating in our reunion activities keeps growing year by year. The recent Cumann Caoga Bliain Reunion was attended by more than 100 graduates and friends from as far back as 1939. Reunion 2008 promises to be the biggest ever with the classes of 1958, 1968, 1978, 1983, 1988 and 1998 coming together on June 7. If you would like to meet one of your former professors or lecturers, let us know and we will invite him/her. If you would like to organise your own class reunion, let us know.
Congratulations to the New England Club, the inaugural winners of the Alumni Association Club Award, this award recognises the alumni group who are considered to have best represented NUI Galway in alumni club activity in the previous 12 months.
The new €40 million Sports Centre is on schedule to be ready for the new academic year and the new €60 million Engineering Building has received planning permission and is due for completion in 2010. These are part of the University's €400 million "Campus of the Future" capital programme.
Best wishes for the summer. If you are back in Galway for a visit, be sure and drop in to our Alumni Office.
Prof W Gerard Hurley (PhD 1988)
Vice President for Strategic Initiatives & External Affairs

A Reunion for the Engineering Class of 1983 (and for all those who crossed paths with this group) will take place on the weekend of 3rd/4th October 2008. The Friday night will be spent at an informal gathering in Wards Hotel, Lower Salthill. The following night a Reunion Dinner will be held in the Ardilaun Hotel, Taylors Hill with music and craic. A major secretive coup to see the return to the disc deck by the one and only Big G (King of the Beach Hotel disco scene in the 70’s & 80’s) is being planned. A variety of Saturday afternoon activities is also being scheduled. There has been great interest in this event already and a large number of the class are planning to attend. The committee would appreciate early commitment to ensure that the facilities are pitched at the right group size.

Two of the foremost jurists in the area of Family and Child Law, The Right Honourable Baroness Hale of Richmond (pictured Left) and Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness, jointly delivered the Annual Distinguished Lecture 2008 hosted by the Faculty of Law at NUI Galway in April.
The lecture, 'Family Law in Ireland and the United Kingdom: Common Threads and Divergent Perspectives' was chaired by Alumni Board Member and family law expert, Geoffrey Shannon. The lecture focused on the division of assets and the question of ’proper provision’ upon divorce, the position of children, and the role of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms in family law.
Full streaming videos are available in three separate files: (1) the introduction by the President of NUI Galway and the paper of Baroness Hale; (2) the paper of Mrs. Justice McGuinness; and (3) the questions and answers session.

Over 100 graduates and friends attended the 9th annual
Cumann Caoga Bliain event in NUI Galway on Thursday 17th April. The
Cumann Caoga Bliain was initiated in 2000 by the University’s Alumni Office and was established to encourage and help maintain the relationship that our senior alumni have with their
alma mater. Since its inception, this club has grown with more alumni returning to campus each year. Lunch is followed by a bus tour of a campus vastly transformed.
This year’s event was attended by alumni whose graduation years ranged from 1939 to 1957. The most senior attendee was Mr Charles McGrath, an engineering graduate from 1939 who travelled from Dublin to celebrate the 69th year of his graduation.

Almost 100 alumni, from all years and faculties, came together for a reunion on Friday 25th April in the Custume Barracks, Athlone. A buffet dinner, refreshments and music were on offer and the attendees enjoyed an evening of catching up with old friends and meeting new people. They were joined by Guest of Honour, Dr Jim Browne BE 1974, MEngSc, 1978, President of NUI Galway and Athlone native.
Pictured here are event organisers Sinead Lenehan BA 1978 and Arthur Geraghty BA 1987 (far left and right respectively) with Dr Jim Browne BE 1974, MEngSc 1978 and Maeve Browne BA 1975, HDip in Education 1976.
The NUI Galway Midlands Reunion was organised with the kind assistance of Commandant Jim Byrne BSc 1978, Custume Barracks.
Over fifty BE graduates and friends of the College of Engineering attended the Engineering Network Dinner to launch the Corrib Engineering Network on Friday May 16th. The dinner hosted by the President Dr Jim Browne and Galway University Foundation, highlighted the need for philanthropic support for the University’s New Engineering Building. Set in the Quadrangle, the evening brought together graduates from the 1960’s to the 1990’s to hear of the development of this truly world class learning and research resource. Two students, Martin Howley (2nd Civil Engineering) and Eamonn O’Mairtín (4th Biomedical Engineering) led the discussions on the plans for the building and took graduates through the buildings resources and philosophy.
At a cost of €61 million the 14,000 square meter building will be Irelands Largest Engineering educational centre. The culmination of the 5 disciplines under the one roof for the first time presents a major opportunity for the cross pollination of ideas into a unique and symbiotic learning experiences and work environment for students and staff. The major challenge facing the project is the delivery of adequate financial support for the new state-of-the-art building. The Corrib Engineering Network is a network of graduates, faculty and friends dedicated to realising adequate financial support. Membership is open to all individuals making an annual contribution of €1,500.

Engineering Building, or how you might support the development of the Building, please contact Susan Treacy, Development Executive. Galway University Foundation 091 495497 or e-mail

This symposium will bring together key commentators on higher education in order to pose a fundamental question: What is the purpose of the University in the 21st Century? The symposium will include keynote speakers and a series of workshops led by facilitators who are experts in the field. Participants will also be able to engage in discussions in the workshops on specific themes, including civic engagement, globalisation, and the links between research and teaching.
This event is aimed at anyone working in or with an interest in higher education. The questions being raised and discussed are broad ranging and of a wide interest. Academic and administrative staff, as well as students should find this event of use and can choose workshop themes to suit their own interests.
