Book celebrates 60th anniversary of AmNESTY
Former Dean of Law, Donncha O’Connell BA 1988, LLB 1990, has recently edited a book to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) for Amnesty International.

Alumni and friends packed into the Davenport in October to see local legend, NUI Galway Alumni Award winner and Chairman of the Labour Party, Michael D. Higgins T.D. speak about his life and times with fellow alumnus Harry McGee of the
Irish Times. The event was the first of the new season by the prodigious Dublin Alumni Club.

NUI Galway Film Seminar in London
The NUI Galway Alumni Association, in conjunction with the Department of Management, King’s College London, recently hosted a seminar on film in the Irish Club London. Mr Rod Stoneman, Director of the Huston School of Film and Digital Media at NUI Galway, and Dr Seán Crossan Course Co-ordindator of the MA in Film Studies in the Huston School addressed over 40 NUI Galway graduates who attended the event.

GAlway University Foundation New York Gala Dinner
Save-the-Date: Wednesday 18th November 18th
The NUI Galway New York Gala Dinner will take place in the Metropolitan Club, New York City on Wednesday 18th November from 6.30pm. With a special performance by 2009 Honoree Paul Brady, this promises to be a wonderful evening in keeping with the success of our 2007 and 2008 events. Proceeds from Gala Dinner 2009 will support NUI Galway's academic programs and campus development plans. Read on.
Dr James J. Browne is pictured in September in the American Irish Historical Society, New York, with former Junior Year Abroad student Tina Jones and her husband, alumnus and Galway University Foundation US Board member, Adrian Jones, at
John McGahern in The New Yorker. The event, sponsored by Galway University Foundation, featured an illustrated talk by Dr John Kenny (pictured below) and an exhibition of the University’s archive of the work of John McGahern. The talk and archive also toured to the Boston Public Library and was similarly attended by alumni and friends of the University.

San Francisco Alumni Club Launch
In September, President James J Browne attended the launch of a San Francisco Alumni Club in the Irish Consulate, San Francisco, upon requests from alumni in the area. The President and 80 guests were hosted by the Irish Consul General in San Francisco, Gerry Staunton.

Classes of 1978 & 1979 Reunion
Save-the-Date: Saturday 7th November
Due to the success of last year’s UCG 1978/79 Graduate (and friends!) Reunion, the organisers have decided to repeat the celebrations again this year on Saturday 7th November. The best of last year’s activities will be replicated and attendees can look forward to participating in the heckling of a lively ’Lit ’n’ Deb’ session and fully enjoy the witticisms of a Hubert McDermott lecture. Over 60 alumni from the class of 1969 returned to campus to celebrate their 40th reunion in October. Graduates joined together for a reception in the Aula Maxima where they were welcomed back to their alma mater by University President Dr James Browne and enjoyed a bus tour of a radically developed campus.
The class gathered together again that evening for a reunion dinner in the Galway Bay Hotel with entertainment provided by Marc Roberts.
Engineering Class of 1974 Reunion
Over 30 alumni from the Engineering Class of 1974 returned to Galway to attend their 35th Reunion in October. The attendees, which included NUI Galway President, Dr Jim Browne, BE 1974, MEngSc 1978, PhD 1980, DSc 1990, enjoyed a tour of the University campus. Their celebrations culminated with a reunion dinner in the Radisson Blu Hotel.
Graduates triumph at ppi Awards
NUI Galway Alumni Award recipient Sean O'Rourke, BA 1977, and the News at One picked up two separate honours at the PPI Awards last month for Best News Programme and News Broadcaster of the Year. The PPI Awards recognise the art and skill in radio production and programming. This is Sean's second consecutive time to receive the award of News Broadcaster of the Year. Fellow alumnus Dr Gavin Jennings BSc 1997, MB, BCh, BAO 1999, took bronze in the News Reporter of the Year category.

At the conferring ceremonies in NUI Galway are three female generations of graduates of the University, l-r, Kitty Dowling nee Kyne BSc 1945 (Mountmellick, Co Laois), her daughter Breda Dowling BA 1978 (Castlebar, Co Mayo), and Breda's daughter Sally Ann Gannon BA 2009, pictured with University President Dr James J Browne.
All of grandmother Kitty’s seven children are alumni of NUI Galway and Sally Ann's father, Paul Gannon, is also an alumnus. Kitty taught all her life in Mountmellick, Co Laois and was one of the first female teachers to continue teaching after having children.
