Welcome to the first edition of Alumni Links for the new academic year and a special welcome to our new first year students. This edition contains several articles on events including class reunions and a 10th reunion of FLIRT FM, the campus radio station. There will be a special event in November to honour the memory of Jerome Hynes, former Chief Executive of the Wexford Opera Festival.
Work has started on the new € 40m sports centre on campus, which will include a swimming pool and a full range of state-of-the-art sport facilities. Construction has also commenced on an extension to the Martin Ryan Marine Science Institute, which is funded under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI).
Graduations take place at the end of October, if you are attending the graduation of friends or relatives, be sure to drop by the Alumni Office. The Alumni Office extends good wishes to the graduands and looks forward to welcoming them as alumni.

Irene speaks on her recent book The Bible War in Ireland: The ’Second Reformation’ and the Polarization of Protestant Catholic Relations 1800-1840, a vivid and compelling account of the evangelical movement and the sources of modern religious and political polarization in Ireland. Irene is currently Associate Professor of History and Director of Irish Studies at Manhattanville College.

Tickets for the Ball are now on general sale. Last year 220 graduates from two dozen universities attended. This year 300 tickets are available, and the organisers fully expect these to sell out quickly, based on last year's demand, the great time everyone had last year and the word spreading about BIG in America.

In September 2005 NUI Galway graduate Jerome Hynes BA 1980, HDip in Ed 1981 and LLB 1988 passed away suddenly at the age of 45. At the time of his death he was Director of the Wexford Opera, Deputy Chairman to the Irish Arts Council and member of the Board of the National Concert Hall.
In recognition of the valuable contribution Jerome made to the Arts both nationally and internationally, the University, through its Múscailt Festival, named an award for the ’Best One Act Play’ in honour his memory. The first award was presented to Henry Martin for his play
Basin of Myself during the Festival.
NUI Galway will host the public launch of the Jerome Hynes Award for Best One Act Play on November 24 - details to follow.
FLIRT (Fully Licensed Independent Radio Transmission) FM celebrated over a decade on air on Saturday 15 July. This milestone was marked by a reunion dinner in Áras Moyola, extended broadcasting and a series of workshops for former and current volunteers. The reunion, organised by founding station manager Andrew Ó Baoill BSc 1998, Pat O'Flaherty, current BA student and Chontelle Kenny BE 1998, balanced and combined the reminiscences and contributions of former volunteers with the enthusiasm and know-how of current volunteers for the continued growth and development of the station.

140 alumni from NUI Galway and other Irish Universities got together in London for a charity champagne cruise on the Thames on 6 July. The proceeds of over £1,200 were donated to the London Irish Centre which provides a range of support services for generations of Irish people living and working in London. Prof Ger Hurley, Vice-President for Strategic Initiatives and External Affairs hosted a dinner for alumni and friends of NUI Galway in Korea on 21 June. The guest of honour was the Irish Ambassador to Korea, His Excellency Conor Murphy.

This year those classes celebrating their 50th, 40th, 30th, 25th, and 10th Anniversaries were invited to celebrate their special milestones at Reunion events from 9th-11th of June. The first to arrive on campus were the Class of 1956 who celebrated their 50th Reunion. Graduates travelled from throughout Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States to attend this special event.
'Through the Years' Reunion BBQ took place on Saturday 10th June in Moffetts Restaurant, Orbsen Building, NUI Galway. All alumni celebrating their 50th, 40th, 30th, 25th and 10th Anniversaries were invited to attend this event. 400 graduates joined together to catch up with each other and re-establish old friendships.

Actor Martin Sheen has registered as an arts student at the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway, taking classes in English Literature, Philosophy and Oceanography. Star of the acclaimed TV series ’The West Wing’, and of many memorable movies including Apocalypse Now and Badlands, Sheen will take a break from his illustrious acting career to immerse himself in campus life.

Professor Gerard Quinn, of NUI Galway’s Law Faculty, has been re-appointed by the Government to serve another five year term on the Irish Human Rights Commission. An expert in Disability Law, Prof Quinn is the only person based in the West of Ireland on the Commission, which has made its mark domestically and internationally - where it is a member of the European Coordinating Group of National Human Rights Institutions. September 1, 2006: Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the National University of Ireland, Galway have agreed a new strategic collaborative research partnership in the humanities and bioengineering. The TCD Provost, Dr John Hegarty, and NUI Galway’s President, Dr Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh, together signed the bilateral agreement this week, which will enable their respective institutions to build collaborative and complementary strengths.
