Fáilte chuig an céad eagrán de e-nuachtlitir na gcéimithe don bhliain acadúil 2007/2008. Fáilte faoi leith do na mic léinn nua chuig an Ollscoil.
Welcome to the first edition of Alumni Links for the new academic year and a special welcome to our new first year students. This edition contains several articles on events including class reunions and the Literary & Debating Society Alumni Ball. There are alumni events in November in New York, Boston and Beijing.
The Student Send Off Programme, where the Alumni Board and student Services organise information sessions for new students and their parents, was a great success this year with over 1,100 participants in various towns around the region including Sligo, Ennis, Castlebar, Donegal Town, Athlone and Galway City.
The University Management recently approved funding for a new alumni database system, which will greatly improve communications with our alumni.
The University recently hosted the inaugural Paddy Ryan Memorial Lecture, a joint initiative with Galway Chamber and GMIT. Paddy Ryan was a former Mayor of Galway and a prominent figure in the commercial life of the city. The lecture was delivered by Declan Kelly, Chairman and CEO of Financial Dynamics, New York; Declan is a graduate and an Alumni Award winner.
The University enjoyed great success in the Fourth Round of the Governments Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI), receiving over €23m in research funds. Research areas to benefit from this funding include the Humanities; Social Sciences and Innovation; High End Computing; Biophotonics; Biomedical Sciences and an Environment Graduate Programme.
Graduations take place at the end of October, if you are attending the graduation of friends or relatives, be sure to drop by the Alumni Office. The Alumni Office extends good wishes to the graduands and looks forward to welcoming them as alumni.
Prof W Gerard Hurley (PhD 1988)

Galway Theatre Collective Dragonfly returned from New York in high spirits after the successful U.S. Premiere of their new play: Married to the Sea. The Galway-based company were selected to participate in this year's New York International Fringe Festival, the largest multi-arts festival in North America with over 200 theatre companies from around the world performing in over 25 Manhattan venues over a 2 week period. Apart from receiving rave reviews from the U.S. media the company also managed to scoop the covetous Outstanding Actor's Award, which was awarded to Siobhan Donnellan who plays the demanding role of the main character, Jo, an eight year old girl from the Old Claddagh.
Fiachra O'Dubhghaill ( Cork), Shona McCarthy ( Dublin ) and Siobhan Donnellan (Clare), the three founding members of Dragonfly met while undertaking the MA Degree in Drama and Theatre Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Dragonfly also had a very successful run in the Dublin Fringe Festival earlier this month where they picked up yet another award for Best New Writing.
Pictured above are Siobhan Donnellan and Fiachra O’Dubhghaill accepting a cheque for €2,000 from Emma Goode representing the University's Alumni Association Board. The donation supported the Dragonfly Theatre Company’s trip to perform at the Eleventh Annual New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC), in August.

The international student community at NUI Galway has expanded considerably over the years, contributing to a culturally diverse atmosphere on campus. There are currently in excess of 1,500 international students on campus, accounting for 10% of the student population.
In an effort to enrich the experience for these students, the International Affairs Office launched the ’Host Family Programme’ in 2005. Students are matched with participating families and contact can range from the occasional Sunday lunch to a family outing etc. Students do not live with their host families.
Families who have participated to date, have found the experience to be very positive and culturally enriching both for themselves and their own families. The University is actively seeking graduate host families in the Galway area for this programme. For further information please see the attached leaflet.
