Alumni Hour is a new show in which well-known alumni regale host Sandra Butler with tales of their student days in Galway – all set to the soundtrack of their favourite tunes from that time. The first guest on Sandra’s show was Dr Jim Browne, alumnus and president of NUI Galway.

NUI Galway New York Gala Dinner

The NUI Galway New York Gala Dinner will take place in the Metropolitan Club, New York City on Wednesday 17th November from 6.30pm. This year's event will honour Irial Finan, NUI Galway Class of 1977 and Executive Vice President, the Coca-Cola Company and will feature a special performance by Mary Black.

Sigerson Golden Jubilee Reunion Celebration

Irish Centre for Human Rights 10th Anniversary

The Irish Centre for Human Rights welcomed its first LLM students in September 2000 and will host a series of events to celebrate ten years of the Centre’s teaching, research and advocacy.

The main 10th anniversary event is a major academic conference by the Irish Centre for Human Rights, on the theme of “Forgotten Rights, Forgotten Concepts”. This will encompass a number of original human rights issues across a broad spectrum which the speakers feel have fallen out of favour or been overlooked. The Conference will be held on campus on 19 and 20 November 2010, and will include many distinguished academics and friends of the Irish Centre for Human Rights. Read on.

Dublin Alumni Club presents…Festive Favourites with Tenor David O’Leary and the NUI Galway Chamber Orchestra plus special guests 

A festive evening of carols and festive favourites in the magnificent setting of St. Ann's Church, Dawson Street.

With arrangements by Cohen, Rosenhaus and Ryden, this concert will mark the first Christmas performance for the New York-based O'Leary on home soil. Adding to the spectacle on the night will be friends from the NUI Galway Chamber Orchestra and a guest performance by rising star and uileann piper Mark Redmond.

Alumni Networks in Spain

The Spanish-Irish Business Network (SIBN) was launched in January 2008 to promote business links between Spain and Ireland. The Network has organised two pan-alumni social events that will take place on Thursday 20th January from 8.00pm at the James Joyce Irish Pub, Alcalá 59 in Madrid and at The Michael Collins, Placa de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Soccer Club Reunion

The NUI Galway Soccer Club hosted a Reunion Banquet at the Ardilaun Hotel, Taylor’s Hill in August. The reunion included a golf tournament in Glenlo Abbey, a soccer match in Dangan plus a tour of the campus.

The reunion celebrated  UCG’s famous Collingwood cup wins in 1967/68 in Cork, 1969/70 in Galway, 1970/71 in Belfast and 1998/99 in Limerick.

Dublin Alumni Club presents...A Night at the Theatre: Bondi Beach Boy Blue

The NUI Galway Dublin Alumni club enjoyed a night out in the Tivoli Theatre in August at “Bondi Beach Boy Blue”, by playwright and NUI Galway graduate, Benny McDonnell, BA 1997, MA 1998.

A reception and Q&A session with Benny McDonnell and Sunday Independent journalist, Marie Crowe followed the performance.

Irish Universities and Colleges Alumni Thames Cruise: London

NUI Galway alumni joined with graduates from other Irish universities and colleges for an autumn cruise and barbeque on the Golden Jubilee in September. Alumni enjoyed an onboard barbeque along the Thames and a DJ provided entertainment.

San Francisco Bay Area Alumni: Furey Brothers and Davey Arthur Pre-Concert Reception

NUI Galway alumni joined together for a very special evening of music with The Furey Brothers and Davey Arthur in The United Irish Cultural Center, San Francisco in September. Graduates were treated to an exclusive reception prior to the performance.

San Francisco Bay Area - Snooker Night

Bay Area Committee member, Moyra Malone, hosted a snooker night in her home for alumni and friends of NUI Galway in August.

Dublin Alumni Club Annual Golf Outing: Mullingar Golf Club

The NUI Galway Dublin Alumni club held its inaugural annual Alumni Golf Day in Mullingar Golf Club in September. Overall winner on the day was guest Sean Silke. Other prizes were won by Leo Gardiner, Tony Reagan, Joe Bracken, Sean O’Rourke, Martin Newell. Michael Mooney, Eoin Ruane and Noel Golden, Margaret Taaffe-Ward and Bill Noone

NUI Galway Mayo Alumni Club Launch

Mayo-based alumni gathered together for the launch of the NUI Galway Mayo Alumni Club in Westport in September. They attended a performace of The Legend of Gráinne Mhaol and enjoyed an evening of spectacle, music, song and dance followed by the launch of the NUI Galway Mayo Alumni Club and a post-show reception with the cast of Gráinne Mhaol.

NUI Galway Club presents...Inverin Wind Farm Tour

The NUI Galway Club organised a tour of the Inverin Wind Farm in September. The tour was presented by Caitríona Diviney BE 1994, Chief Operating Officer, Irish Wind Energy Association and Seán Ó Foighil, Proprietor. The tour was followed by a reception in An Crúiscín Lán, Spiddal.

The NUI Galway Dublin Alumni Club organised an exclusive "sneak peek" preview tour of Terminal 2, Dublin Airport's new 75,000 square metre terminal building in October. The tour was led by Vincent Wall, Dublin Airport Authority.

 30 & 40 Year Reunion

Graduates from the classes of 1980 and 1970 attended a reunion celebrating the 30th and 40th years of their graduation in October.

The day began with an afternoon reception and tour of the campus, followed that evening by dinner in The Meyrick Hotel (formerly the Great Southern), Eyre Square.

1984 Evening BA Reunion

The Evening Arts class who graduated in 1984 held their reunion in the Meyrick (Great Southern) Hotel on in October.

The reunion included a campus tour led by 1984 Evening Arts graduate Peadar O'Dowd followed by a talk by Professor Hubert McDermott.

Dublin Alumni Club presents..."THE GOVERNMENT'S ECONOMIC AND BANKING POLICIES ARE WORKING"

The Dublin Alumni Club organised a debate on the subject "The Government's Economic and Banking Policies are Working" in October. Éamon Ó Cuív, TD, Minister for Social Protection supported the motion with Pat Rabbitte, TD, Labour Party Spokesman on Justice
BA 1970, HDip in Ed 1972, LLB 1997 opposing it.

Seán O'Rourke, RTÉ, BA 1977, moderated the debate.

MAcc, Master of Accounting Reunion

120 MAcc alumni gathered for a reunion to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the NUI Galway MAcc programme in Dublin in November. A similar event is planned for next year in Galway. Click here to view photos from this event.

20 & 25 Year Reunion

The graduating classes of 1985 and 1990 were invited to return to Galway for their twenty five and twenty year reunions in November. Festivities began at 3pm with a reception in the Quadrangle, followed by a bus tour of campus. A reunion dinner was held later that evening in the Meyrick Hotel, Eyre Square (formerly the Great Southern).

Alumni Board Retreat

The Alumni Association Board attended its fifth annual Board retreat in Westport in October. The purpose of the retreats is to provide orientation for new members and briefing sessions for all members and discuss plans and activities.

The new Alumni Board Chairperson, Mairin Gilvarry, formally took on her new role at this year’s retreat and new additions; Meghann Drury MBS 2003, Peter Mannion BCorpLaw 2009, Michael Mooney BE 1971 and Suzanne Ryan MBS 1993, PGDipHSc 2008 were welcomed to the Board.

Alumni in the News

Dr Tony Hall (pictured left) has been appointed as Head of the School of Education, NUI Galway. Tony is also Vice-Dean for Learning and Assessment, College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies. Tony is a graduate of University of Limerick and NUI Galway.

NUI Galway alumnus, Mr Jack Keane has been appointed President of the country's largest post-primary teachers' union, the ASTI. Mr Keane is a graduate of NUI Galway and teaches Geography and English in Rice College, Ennis.

John Concannon, director of market development at Fáilte Ireland, was last week named Marketer of the Year 2010 for his work on encouraging more Irish people to take short breaks in Ireland. In its 18 years of existence, this is the first time the award has gone to a public sector company. John is a BComm, Masters in Marketing and DMP graduate of NUI Galway.

NUI Galway graduate, Carol Leonard BA 2006 (pictured left), was announced the co-winner of RTÉ’s reality show Do the Right Thing. Carol was awarded a unique fully paid one-year package volunteering in Ghana, India and Thailand.
