My name is Oonagh Monahan.
I am running for election to the NUI panel of Seanad Eireann for one of the three places available.
Voting is reserved for graduates of the NUI and I am seeking your vote.
Hello! I graduated from UCG in 1986 with a
B.Sc., and from UCD (Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering) in 1991 with a Masters of Engineering Science.
Anyone who was in UCG in the mid-1980’s might remember me from my involvement in the Literary & Debating Society.
In 2004, I was one of only two non-staff members since 1906 to be elected to one of the four places reserved for graduates on the NUI Galway Governing Authority.
As a member of Seanad Eireann I would be independent and objective. I think the Seanad would benefit from new blood, from a new member who is genuinely interested in being elected, and not merely appointed as a consolation for failing to be elected as a TD, or as a semi-retirement plan. I believe my energy, enthusiasm, education and experience make me an excellent candidate.
Upon graduation from UCG I joined Cumann Ceimithe na Gaillimhe (CCG), the Graduates Association, and became a life-long member. In 2000, I became involved in the Alumni Association and was Chairperson from 2001 – 2003, which saw the incorporation of the Graduates Association as part of the new Alumni Association.
Having worked in Ireland and abroad in private industry and in education, I believe that I have a very good knowledge and understanding as to how graduates can contribute to society, the economy and to everyday life in communities through their knowledge and experience. Furthermore, I wish to represent graduates in Seanad Eireann and act as an advocate on their behalf.
Upon election to Seanad Eireann I would work closely with the Alumni Associations of NUI Galway and of UCD, where I am a member of both organizations. This is a function of the elected graduate members of the NUI panel of the Seanad that I feel needs to be developed and utilized more effectively.
The election will be conducted following a postal ballot, probably in July, after the General Election. The voting papers for the Seanad election will be posted to graduate’s registered address. Although the closing date for new registrations was February 25th last, you can still update your contact details with the NUI provided you are already on their books. To check the address at which you are registered, you can ask the NUI by phoning 01-439 2424 or email the NUI on
