NUI Galway Dublin Alumni Club presents… Colm Murray in Conversation with Sean O’Rourke

200 alumni and friends gathered in the Press Conference Room of the Aviva Stadium on June 16th to listen to veteran sportscaster Colm Murray talk about his life and times to friend and colleague Sean O’Rourke. Colm discussed his childhood in Moate, life at NUI Galway, careers, both as a secondary school teacher and as a much loved sports presenter on RTÉ, and the onset of Motor Neuron Disease.

A recording of this event will be broadcast on RTÉ radio later this summer and a video from the evening's proceedings will be available shortly.

NUI Galway Dublin Alumni Club presents… A Taste of Dublin

Forty alumni and friends enjoyed the multitude of exhibition stands and demonstrations at this year's Taste of Dublin Festival on June 9th. The live music, al fresco dining and wine tastings made for a wonderful atmosphere. Thanks again to the Dublin Alumni Club for organising the event!

NUI Galway Dublin Alumni Club presents... Seanad Election Candidates Debate

Eighty alumni and friends assembled to hear two NUI Galway alumni, Senator Rónán Mullen, BA 1991 and Donncha O’Connell BA 1988, LLB 1990 debate campaign issues in an event moderated by Harry McGee BA 1987, HDipContEd 1989, LLB 1993.

Congratulations to Senator Rónán Mullen who was re-elected to serve a second term in the Seanad.

NUI Galway Dublin Alumni Club presents... President Jim Browne in Conversation with Caroline Murphy

Over 80 NUI Galway graduates and guests attended NUI Galway Dublin Alumni Club’s presentation of Dr Jim Browne, President of NUI Galway, in conversation with Caroline Murphy of RTE in the Shelbourne Hotel on March 30th. The evening was introduced by Máiréad Ní Nuadháin BA 1974, deputy director of TV programmes at RTÉ.

In a wide-ranging interview, the President discussed his schooldays in Athlone and Summerhill College, Sligo; his own experiences as a student in NUI Galway, the future of third level education in Ireland and his plans for the future of NUI Galway.

NUI Galway European Alumni Club Launch in Brussels

European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn officially launched NUI Galway’s European Alumni Club in Brussels on June 21st. This is the first NUI Galway Alumni Club established in Europe by the University’s Alumni Association and NUI Galway alumni based in Brussels and throughout Europe were invited to reconnect with fellow graduates and their alma mater. Future alumni events will be planned for other cities across Europe.

The launch reception was hosted by Irish Ambassador Tom Hanney at The Embassy of Ireland, Brussels and was attended by University President Dr Jim Browne and 50 alumni and friends. Graduates who are interested in becoming involved in the European Alumni Club can contact the Alumni Office by emailing alumninuigalway.ie.

NUI Galway Alumni Club presents... A Night at the Theatre

16 alumni attended Druid Theatre Company’s production of The Cripple of Inishmaan in the Town Hall Theatre, Galway on June 23rd. 

The play was directed by Druid artistic director and NUI Galway alumna, Garry Hynes BA 1974. Ms Hynes also received an honorary doctorate from NUI Galway in 1997.

In a further strengthening of ties between the two groups, NUI Galway is contributing to the development of Druid’s next major theatre event while Druid, in turn, is developing a range of practice-led workshops and seminars including a series of Master classes for BA and MA students.

Classes of 2001 & 2006 Reunion BBQ

The classes of 2001 and 2006 returned to NUI Galway to celebrate their 5th and 10th year reunion on June 11th. The celebrations were held in the Students' Union Bar with a BBQ on the patio overlooking the Corrib. The night finished up to the sounds of the late nineties and early noughties.

Cumann Caoga Bliain – 50th Anniversary Reunion

Over 100 graduates and friends attended the annual Cumann Caoga Bliain (50 Year Club) reunion in NUI Galway on April 9th. The programme included a reception, a bus tour of campus, a photographic exhibition, a remembrance mass, and a Reunion Dinner in the former Great Southern Hotel (The Meyrick).

NUI Galway Alumni Club presents… Cruise on the Corrib Princess: Thursday 7th July

The NUI Galway Alumni Club invites all graduates to the third annual cruise on the Corrib Princess on Thursday July 7th. The Corrib Princess will depart from Woodquay at 7.00pm for a leisurely four hour cruise along Lough Corrib’s famous Steamers Line. Tickets are €25.00 per person and include a delicious BBQ served on board and entertainment provided by Galway Bay FM’s Marc Roberts.
