Anatomy Information for Second Level Teachers
Information for teachers about a Science Degree in Anatomy
There are few specific careers for persons that have studied anatomy to degree level in Ireland, and what careers there are usually require further postgraduate study. The study of anatomy is not a back door into medicine or physiotherapy in Ireland, although it is useful for admission to graduate level programmes in these areas in the UK (RCSI is the exception in Ireland). Students wishing to pursue this route should be aware that it will require 4 years study to gain an honours degree in anatomy, followed by at least four more years (3 for physio) postgraduate study. This assumes that the person is accepted into such a programme, the minimum standards usually being a 2:1 or first class honours degree. The fees for these courses are expensive. Cost of living in the North or mainland UK would also have to be considered.
Anatomy is a recognized subject of study for admission to the H.Dip. in Education.
The
Faculty of Science provides specific outreach programmes to second-level schools which can involve visits by science faculty staff to the school in question. This gives an opportunity for students to ask direct questions regarding subject choices, careers options etc. More information is available from the Science Faculty office.
The university operates an Open Day when representatives of all the faculties and departments are available to meet with prospective students, their teachers and parents. The Open Day is widely advertised in the national media and more information can be obtained from
Aras Failte.
