Profile & Research Interests:

Elaine is the manager of the Galway County Biodiversity Project – ’ People and Nature’ a partnership project between the Applied Ecology Unit of NUI, Galway and Galway County Council supported by the Heritage Council and Galway Rural Development.

The Biodiversity Project has a particular emphasis on biodiversity education and developing community partnerships to conserve local biodiversity.

Elaine graduated from NUI, Galway with a BSc in Marine Science in1999 and obtained an MSc in Ecosystem Conservation and Landscape Management from University College Cork in 2003.

Current Activities:

The Galway County Biodiversity Project is supervised by Dr Mike Gormally from the Centre for Environmental Science, NUI, Galway and Marie Mannion, Heritage Officer with Galway County Council.

Biodiversity simply means the variety of all the life on earth and the different ways in which all living things exist and interact with each other and the world around them. It includes all the different types of plants, animals and micro-organisms as well as the different habitats and ecosystems.

The aim of the People and Nature project is to raise awareness of biodiversity among all sectors of the community while increasing our knowledge of the habitats and species of County Galway by gathering information and promoting research relevant to the biodiversity of the county.

The People and Nature project has been ongoing since 2005 and has undertaken a range of projects and activities including:

Community conservation projects
School biodiversity projects
Production of information material on biodiversity
Invasive species research and removal projects
Public awareness events and activities
Development of Galway County Biodiversity Action Plan
