What is Applied Mathematics ?
The study of natural physical phenomena dates back to antiquity, but it was not until the seventeenth century that great physicists and mathematicians like Descartes and Newton made the first real progress in devising theories that actually had predictive power. This set in motion the effective mathematical modelling of Nature. Modern science is founded almost entirely on this approach. The aim is to give a logical and systematic account of natural phenomena and mathematics is very effective, even quire unreasonably so, in doing this. Applied Mathematics is concerned with the application of mathematics to real-world situations. Typical examples include topics arising in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, Social Sciences, Medicine and Population Studies etc. Computers are often used to help with tedious calculations and enhance the mathematical analysis.
