This course deals with the different ways that archaeologists use archaeological evidence to explain past societies and social change as well as a field project where students learn the fundamentals of recording archaeological monuments.
Dates: Semester I, September – November

Assessment: one short essay (1500-2000 words) and a fieldwork survey project

Description: This course focuses on the prehistoric landscapes of western Ireland, with lectures covering subjects relevant to the area in which the particular diploma is being offered. Topics can include the megalithic tombs of the Burren, the Late Bronze Age chiefdom of Dún Aonghasa, the megalithic tombs of Sligo and the royal complex at Rathcroghan, Co. Roscommon.

Topics can include Christianity in the west, secular settlement, and the towns, castles and other remnants of the Anglo-Norman and Medieval Gaelic period.
