An investigatin of transhumance practices in ireland and their role in settlement and society
c. 1500 to
c. 1900 AD
Eugene Costello
Transhumance, or 'booleying', was once a major theme in the farming life of several parts of Ireland, and involved the annual movement of people and their livestock to upland booley sites for the summer. Through a number of regional case-studies, a multi-disciplinary approach will be used in this project to investigate the evolving role of transhumance in Irish farming from
c.1500 to the end of the 19thcentury AD and shed light on the reasons for its disappearance from Irish society.
