This project aims to fill the gap in our understanding of medieval town enclosures in Ireland. Through close inquiry, a typological framework will be formed drawing upon architectural form, historical references, cartographic material and the excavation record accumulated over the preceding decades. This data set will inform and act as a corrector and modifier of the existing narrative relating to the defensive, economic, social and cultural roles of town enclosures in Ireland and facilitate closer comparison with Western European parallels.
