College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies
Summer Internship Scheme
The Summer Internship Scheme was first launched in 2011. It is supported by the Research Office and by the six Schools within the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies. The aim of the scheme within this College is to encourage undergraduate interest in pursuing postgraduate study at NUI Galway. It is directed at students who have not yet begun their final undergraduate Degree year. Each intern has the opportunity to work with a member of academic staff who acts as supervisor and mentor (from one of their Degree disciplines) on specifically identified research. The scheme is open to non-NUIG applicants. Below are short descriptions of projects undertaken by interns during the summer of 2012.

"....The internship programme itself was excellent in relation to the resources it provided to participants, and in particular having access to excellent mentoring advice from Dr Kenny was invaluable. On a final note, I would like to commend the college for this providing this excellent initiative, and would highly recommend it to any student wishing to further their academic career...." |

“...with guidance from Dr. Reilly, I was in a position to familiarise myself with the relevant important literature in this field and subsequently garner a cohesive conclusion in the context of the data at hand...” |

"...In the internship I researched previous volunteerism efforts within the college and college programs in Ireland and abroad to create a literature review. Prospective volunteer organisations and volunteering opportunities were researched, contacted and complied into a prospectus for future students of Italian in NUIG on Erasmus interested in volunteering while studying abroad..." |

"...I found the experience of undertaking a project like this both challenging and rewarding, and would thoroughly recommend to any of my colleagues to consider taking part in such a programme if the opportunity was presented to them..." |

"...I gained an enormous amount of experience from this internship. I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to investigate this fascinating, under explored, topic under the expert tutelage of Dr. Rebecca Anne Barr of the English Department. Her guidance allowed me the freedom to work independently, learning both the challenges and triumphs of the research process. Ultimately, I have left the experience with an extended research paper, having encountered numerous other critical problems, while retaining a desire to learn much more!..." |

"...The chance to partake in the internship has without doubt broadened my view on academia and has given me the hunger to further advance my education and endeavour to bring it to doctorate level and is an invaluable addition to my C.V. The help, guidance and encouragement I received from my supervisor, postgraduate students and other academics within the School was exceptional..." |
|
"...I have benefitted to a great extent from the internship by doing the internet research which has greatly enhanced my knowledge about the resources available on the World Wide Web; it has also been beneficial as a glimpse of postgraduate work..."
|
"...I approached my lecturer Conor Newman and following a series of discussions we decided that owing to NUI Galway’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence in the field of early Irish art, a digital archive of Insular and Continental decorative art, from the Iron-Age to the early medieval period (ca. 400 BC to AD 1200), would greatly benefit lecturers, researchers and graduate students who are working in this area..."
|
"...I am very grateful to the university for giving me the opportunity to participate in the Scheme and particularly indebted to my Supervisor, Dr Felix O’Murchadha, with whom it was a pleasure and a privilege to work..."
|
"...The internship was an invaluable insight into the work required of a research scholar and through methodical practice I was able to achieve a level of competency that I am convinced will stand me in great stead in any future postgraduate study I wish to pursue..." |
