Neurotrophins and Cancer
The neurotrophins are a family of growth factors primarily associated with the nervous system. The original and best characterised neurotrophin is nerve growth factor (NGF). NGF can signal through two different receptors, TrkA or p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR). NGF can induce cell survival through TrkA and either cell survival or apoptosis through p75NTR.
Recently, NGF has been found to have a potential role in the development and survival of breast cancer cells. My project looks at the role of NGF and p75NTR in breast cancer.
