Background

Effective systems analysis and design is a key factor in the successful application of computer-based systems. However, research into systems analysis and design seems to have received less attention in recent years than it did in the past. This does not mean that we know everything we need to know about systems analysis and design. On the contrary, new applications of computer-based systems are being developed, which need appropriate methods of analysis and design (e.g. Web-based systems and ubiquitous computing), new systems development methods have emerged, which need empirical study and evaluation (e.g. agile methods), and an opportunity now arises to reflect upon whether the lessons learnt earlier about systems analysis and design have been applied or have been forgotten.

The objective of this symposium is to provide a forum for researchers, educators and practitioners interested in systems analysis and design to meet and exchange ideas and results. It also provides researchers an opportunity to present their research papers and experience reports, and to take part in open discussions.

The symposium is supported by the AIS Special Interest Group on Systems Analysis & Design (SIGSAND), the Centre for Innovation & Structural Change (CISC), and the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre (Lero).

Symposium Programme

The symposium shall comprise two tracks: (1) Systems Analysis & Design Practice, and
(2) Systems Analysis & Design Education.

Selected papers from the Systems Analysis & Design Education track will be submitted for consideration by the guest editors of a special issue of the Journal of Information Systems Education, to appear in October 2006.

The symposium programme is available as an Adobe PDF file.

Symposium Fee and Proceedings

This symposium is being run in advance of the IFIP WG8.6 Conference on the Transfer and Diffusion of IT for Organisational Resilience, and the organising committee of that conference in conjunction with the Cairnes Graduate School of Business & Public Policy at NUI Galway have kindly agreed to sponsor this pre-conference symposium.

There is no registration fee for the symposium, and catering will be provided on the day.

All papers will be published on the symposium Website, unless otherwise requested by the authors. Copyright of papers shall remain with authors. A volume of proceedings will be made available to all participants at the symposium.

Venue and Travel Information

The symposium will take place in the newly constructed Cairnes Building on the NUI Galway north campus. If you are taking a taxi or consulting campus maps, please note that the Cairnes Building was until recently known as “St. Anthonys”.

There is a map of the campus at: http://www.nuigalway.ie/about/maps/map.php (you will see “St. Anthonys” at the bottom left, building 32).

Please note that you are advised to obtain a temporary car-parking permit if you wish to leave your car in the Cairnes Building car park. Contact Michael.Langnuigalway.ie for further information.

For general information about the university, Galway and hinterland, and useful travel tips on how to get to Galway, please see http://ifip86.nuigalway.ie/travel.html

We have reserved a number of rooms for delegates in the Galway Harbour Hotel at specially negotiated rates. You should contact them directly at infoharbour.ie or +353 91 569 466, and say that you are attending the conference at the university.

Should you wish to stay for longer, we recommend that you arrange this well in advance. Galway is a vibrant city and rooms are hard to find at short notice during peak summer season. The procurement office of National University of Ireland, Galway maintain a list of recommended hotels and guesthouses. If you choose to stay at any of these hotels or guesthouses, notify them that you are visiting NUI Galway and you may be entitled to special rates.

You may book accommodation on-line through Gulliver Ireland, a secure reservations portal used by the Irish Tourism Board.
