Printing a Turnitin Originality Report on Blackboard
The Turnitin Blackboard building block allows students to submit an assignment from within their Blackboard course directly to the Turnitin plagiarism prevention software. Turnitin then generates an 'Originality Report' which identifies unoriginal submitted material.
Originality Reports can be downloaded and/or printed, for the benefit of the instructor, student, examiner or extern.
This document assumes that the Instructor has already created a Turnitin assignment on Blackboard and that a student has already submitted a paper.
The Instructor Accesses the Turnitin Originality Report
- Click on the Turnitin Assignments link under the Course Tools menu item.
- Click ’View’ under the name of the assignment. You will see a list of all student submissions, ordered by the percentage text matching in the originality reports (highest percentage at the top).
Completed originality reports are colour coded with a percentage value. Note that a ghosted out report box indicates that the originality report is being generated. Click on the colour coded icon to view the originality report.
- This will open up the Turnitin document viewer.
The Instructor Downloads/Prints the Turnitin Originality Report
- Within the Turnitin document viewer, the instructor has the option to either download or print the originality report. A downloaded report will be in a pdf document. A downloaded report can be emailed to other parties, but please be very careful when emailing originality reports to colleagues and ensure that the student’s privacy is not breached.
- To download an originality report, click on the little download icon at the bottom left of the viewer.
A dialogue box will appear, indicating the report is being prepared. You will then get a link to download your file (this may appear in a new browser window).
Click the link to start the download. You will then be given the option to open the file or to save the file on your machine. Remember to give the file a meaningful name, and put it in a folder that you’ll remember.
- To print the originality report (without saving it), complete the previous steps, but open the file instead of saving it. Once the file is open, you can print it as usual.
Instructor notes for viewing Originality Reports
Turnitin is not a plagiarism detection tool – it is simply a text matching tool. The percentage matching is not a reliable indicator of the level of plagiarism within student work. You must carefully interpret the originality reports before making a judgement about plagiarism.
