Turnitin Plagiariasm Detection Service

Turnitin's Originality Check helps instructors check students' work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against the world's most accurate text comparison database.

Turnitin takes a piece of work that a student has written and compares the text to an enormous database of other writing. This includes a growing body of student work which has been submitted to the system over the last few years, published journals and peer-reviewed papers and millions of web pages, gathered daily and added to an archive.

The system looks for short strings of words from the student work that match those from an outside source and produces an originality report showing where these matches occur. Each report shows the percentage of text from the student work that matches an outside source. It is up to the marker to determine if this matching text represents plagiarism or not.

How do I use the system?

Turnitin has been fully integrated into Blackboard to make it easier for staff and students to use. A Turnitin Assignment can be created so that students can each submit their own work for automatic scanning. Any instructor on the course can then view the results and check the reports for signs of plagiarism. The report can also be downloaded and emailed to colleagues if necessary.
