How do I add course material in Blackboard?

One of the most popular uses for Blackboard is to hold course materials such as handouts and presentations. Follow these instructions to add course materials to your Blackboard course.

1. Open the Content area of your course by clicking on it in the Course Menu.

2. In the Build Content menu, choose Item.

Build Content /> Create > Item

3. Enter a name and any description for the item you wish to upload

4. Click the Browse My Computer button and locate the file you wish to upload.

For Mac and Linux users: Use file extensions for your attached file
-For Word files add .doc to the end of the file name.
-For Excel files add .xls to the end of the file name.
-For PowerPoint files add .ppt to the end of the file name.
-For PDF files, add .pdf to the end of the file name.
This allows Windows, Mac and Linux computers to identify the type of file you have attached in Blackboard and open it with the appropriate application.

5. Ensure the content is available for students to view, or alternatively that you set the dates for which you wish the content to be available

Content Setting	Explanation
Permit Users to View this Content	When a content item is added to a course it is automatically available by default. This option allows you to set the content to available or unavailable. This allows you to create content and save it in a draft format before it is made available within a course, for students to view. Note: This availability setting is separate from Adaptive Release. If an item is not available users may not access it regardless of the Adaptive Release rules.
Track Number of Views	Select Yes to track the Course Statistics and generate reports on usage and activity for the item.
Select Date and Time Restrictions	Select the range of dates that this item will appear: Select the Display After checkbox for the item to appear after a specific date. If this option is checked, select the corresponding date and time beside. Select the Display Until checkbox for the item to appear until a specific date. If this option is checked, select the corresponding date and time beside.

6. Submit your preferences

You can always go back and edit the item to attach a second file, change the original settings or even delete the item entirely, by clicking the context menu beside any item.

The following file types are recognised by Blackboard Learn. These files can be displayed within a content item:
