The Edit Mode feature allows instructors to make changes to content from directly within the course view.
When an instructor is viewing a course, they may click the Edit Mode switch to quickly modify course content on that page. Instructors should always leave Edit Mode on, unless they wish to view their course from a student perspective.
When Edit Mode is on, you will enter an instructor-specific view which allows you to add content to your course using the four buttons near the top of the course screen: Build Content, Create Assessment, Add Interactive Tool and Assign Textbook.
You will also be able to alter the layout of your course, such as changing the order of items in the course menu or re-ordering content. Maybe you've created a course summary document which you'd like to place above all the notes you've already uploaded. No problem, just drag-and-drop the item to its new position.
First grab the item, by clicking-and-holding on to its handle.
Then drag the item up to a new position and release to save this change.
To better understand what your course looks like to your students, you can always turn Edit Mode off. In this circumstance, you will not be able to make any modifications to your course until you switch Edit Mode back on. Try adding some content to your course, then switch Edit Mode off. What differences do you notice?
We already know what our course looks like with Edit Mode on. Let's try turning it off:
When Edit Mode is off, you will no longer have the context menus which allow you to modify each item. You will also no longer be able to re-order items. Perhaps the biggest change you'll notice is the reduced number of links in the course menu. So why is this?
Blackboard attempts to make each course as content-rich, yet clutter-free as possible. If you have opted not to add content to a particular section on the course menu, Blackboard will not display that section to your students.
In this instance, I have not yet placed any content in the Course Information, Learning Outcomes and Feedback sections, so they do not appear in the student view. The Staff Notifications section will never be displayed to students.
Note: Although it will always appear to instructors, students will never have a Control Panel.
