With the end of the academic year comes the time to set up new Blackboard courses for next year. New courses are created during the summer months, once the syllabus files have been returned to Academic Records. This way, when the next academic year begins you will have a fresh and empty Blackboard course with new students enrolled (once they register), thus allowing a new cohort to use the course, unaffected by previous students.
New courses are automatically created every July. Members of staff who are listed in the previous year as teaching a course will automatically be given instructor rights to these courses for the next academic session. For the academic year 2011-2012, these courses can be identified by the prefix 1112-<Course Code> (e.g. 1112-MD120, or 1112-1BA1), and in 2012-2013 the prefix is 1213.
Please rollover your course materials according to the three steps below.
Instructors will retain access to the previous year's courses for reference, but students will lose access to these old courses.
Once students begin to register for the new academic year, they will appear in the list of enrolled students on their respective Blackboard courses automatically (within 24 hours). Students will lose access to courses from the previous academic year. The student registration schedule is viewable online from the Registration Office.
Your previous year's courses have not been changed. When you log into Blackboard you should see your previous year's courses and your new courses for this academic year. New courses have 12-13 prefixed to the course title so that you may quickly identify your new course.
If you are teaching any modules that you, or a colleague, had not previously requested access to on Blackboard, fill in a module request form . We will then manually process your request. If the module was in use by someone else in the previous year, it will be quicker to ask them directly to assign you in as a co-instructor on the 1213 Blackboard course. Otherwise we will be writing back to you asking for written confirmation from them to transfer the ownership of the module to you.
The new courses will be completely empty. The next step is to transfer your course material to the new course. This involves using the Course Copy function to bulk copy your material to your new course. The following step-by-step guide will take you through this:
Copy Content Between Your Blackboard Courses - Each year, a new Blackboard course is created for the newly registered cohort of students for every module and course. This guide explains how you can quickly move resources from your previous to your current active module.
Note: Lecturers/Instructors will need to ensure they make their new 1213-Courses available for students access.
