Botany & PLant Science PhD RESEARCH STUDENTS

Botany and Plant Science at NUI Galway has a vibrant PhD program whereby PhD research students work over a period of 3-4 years on a specific plant-related research question in order to generate new knowledge (e.g. publications, patents) and innovations.

When each PhD student has generated sufficient novel findings that meet the requirements for a PhD, they write up a PhD thesis which is then submitted for review to an external examiner and internal examiner who conduct a viva voce examination of the PhD candidate to determine whether a PhD should be awarded.

Each PhD researcher works within the research lab/group/team of one of the BPS Academic Staff members ( Principal Investigators) who acts as their PhD supervisor, and is supported by a Graduate Research Committee (GRC).

Each PhD student presents their work annually to their GRC Committee. All BPS PhD research students present their research findings within the BPS Internal Researcher Seminar Series and also regularly present their research at conferences in Ireland and internationally.

As of March 2012, the Discipline of Botany and Plant Science has 20 full-time PhD research students and 1 full-time MSc by research student conducting research on a wide range of plant-related topics.
