CCTV- FAQ’s
Q. What is the CCTV system used for?
A. To record all movements of student, staff and public for viewing in the event of an incident.
Q. Who views the CCTV system?
A. The system is view by security personnel and is administrated by the head of security for the Buildings office NUI Galway.
Q. What is the period of retention?
A. The images captured should be retained for an average of 28 days, except where the image identifies an issue and is retained specifically in the context of an investigation of that issue.
Q. Who is entitled to apply for a copy of the footage?
A. If a law enforcement authority, such as An Garda Síochána, is seeking a recording for a specific investigation, it is up to the data controller to satisfy itself that there is a genuine investigation underway. For practical purposes, in cases of urgency a phone call to the requesting Garda's station may be sufficient, provided that you speak to a member in the District Office, the station sergeant or a higher ranking officer, as all may be assumed to be acting with the authority of a District/Divisional officer in confirming that an investigation is authorised. In all situations, it is advised that the disclosure of such recordings is best handled in response to a formal written communication from the Gardaí indicating that the material is sought for the prevention, investigation or detection of a crime.
Any person whose image has been recorded has a right to be given a copy of the information recorded. To exercise that right, a person must make an application in writing. A data controller may charge for responding to such a request and must respond within 40 days. This will, of course, only apply if the recording has been retained and is available at the time the request is made. Persons not relevant to requested footage may be screened for data protection purposes.
