Biography:

Alma McCarthy (Dip. Training & Education, BBS with French (1st class hons.), MCIPD, PhD) is Director of the Executive MBA Programme and a Lecturer in Management at the National University of Ireland, Galway.  She has taught previously at the University of Limerick and Waterford Institute of Technology.  She lectures in the areas of Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour, and Human Resource Development.  Her research interests include performance management, human resource development, work-life balance, and multi-rater (360º) feedback systems.  She completed her PhD thesis in the human resource development field exploring specifically 360º feedback and appraisal processes.  Alma’s publications include:  a number of articles in journals such as Human Resource Management Review, Personnel Review, Advances in Developing Human Resources, the Journal of European Industrial Training, the Journal of Managerial Psychology, the International Journal of Manpower Studies, and the Journal of Vocational Educational Training;  papers at national and international conferences including the Irish Academy of Management, the European Academy of Management, the American Academy of Management, and the American Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology; and co-authored books and several chapters in edited books.  She has experience in designing, delivering, and evaluating business and professional development training programmes aimed at improving managerial competence in a range of small, medium and large organisations in the private and public sectors.  She worked as a Human Resource Development Specialist for a leading insurance and financial services organisation in New York City.  She is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the American Academy of Management (AoM), the Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology (SIOP), and was recently elected as Chair of the Irish Academy of Management (IAM).  She is certified by the British Psychological Society (BPS) to administer a range of cognitive, personality, vocational and behavioural style psychometric instruments.
