Biography

I am a Lecturer in Economics at the JE Cairnes School of Business & Economics at the National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway. I completed my doctoral studies at NUI Galway in 2008, where my work focussed on the valuation of environmental public goods using econometric, spatial microsimulation and GIS techniques. I hold a primary degree in Actuarial and Financial Studies and an MA in Economics from University College Dublin (UCD), as well as an MSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics. I was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley in 2008 and a Visiting Researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2015. I previously worked as a Junior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Limerick and at NUI Maynooth, an Assistant Lecturer in Economics at UCD, and as an Intern at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London.  I also worked as an Economic Consultant with Indecon’s Public Policy Division for five years.

My research interests lie in the application of econometric and spatial modelling techniques in the fields of health economics, education economics and environmental economics, with a specific focus on public policy issues and evidence-based policy.  I have published my research in a number of leading international peer-reviewed journals, including Health Economics, Economics and Human Biology, Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, Health and Place, Spatial Economic Analysis, Regional Studies, Energy EconomicsEnvironmental and Resource Economics, Ecological Economics, Applied Economics and many more.

Research Interests

My research interests lie in the application of econometric and spatial modelling techniques in the fields of health economics, education economics and natural resource economics, with a specific focus on public policy issues and evidence-based policy.  I am very research active and currently working on a number of programmes of research.  In health economics, I am particularly interested in the application of microeconometric techniques to examine issues relating to the economics of disability, obesity, dementia and child health outcomes, as well as using GIS techniques to examine issues relating to population health.  In the fields of education economics and natural resource economics, I am engaged in research programmes examining higher education participation and accessibility, household energy demand and marginal farming.
