Biography:

Dr Royle is an internationally recognized authority in international and comparative employment relations with particular expertise in the area of low-paid service sector employment in multinational corporations, but also in the areas of international labour standards and European Union social policy and legislation. He has acted as an adviser to a number of international institutions including the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Social Affairs Committee of the European Union Parliament, international trade union bodies such as the global union the IUF, and national bodies such as the Irish Labour Relations Commission as well as a number of trade union confederations such as the Dutch and Japanese Trade Union Confederations (FNV and RENGO).

Research and Publication His books (published with Routledge) in 2000 and 2002 have been widely acclaimed internationally and have been sold in large numbers in the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, Japan, attracting many favourable reviews in academic journals His publications output to date amounts to some 56 academic and practitioner publications plus nearly around 80 peer reviewed conference papers, several of which have been presented as opening conference plenary papers and other invited plenaries at prestigious international conferences. His work has achieved a high level of international citations in top international journals, not only in the main his field of international and comparative employment relations, but also in a wide array of international publications as diverse as the Stanford Technology Law Review (2004) and special reports for the European Union Research Institute (2006). In addition his work is widely used as a resource for teaching in universities around the world and has also been published in German, Italian and Spanish. He is currently engaged in a number of different international research projects and writing a textbook with Palgrave MacMillan aimed at final year undergraduates and masters students entitled Global and Comparative Employment Relations: A Critical Analysis to be published in September 2013.

Internal Appointments
In addition to a wide range of teaching experience, module and course development and programme leadership, Dr Royle was Head of the Department of Management at NUI Galway and is subject head for the human resource management and industrial relations group. He is chair of the Management Discipline Graduate Research Committee, Director of Cairnes School PhD Programme, a member of the research performance quality review panel of the Institute for Business Social Science and Public Policy and a member of NUIG’s Academic Standing Committee.

Media Coverage, TV, Radio and Guest Lectures Dr Royle’s research work has also received a lot of attention in the media, with reviews in the Financial Times and other newspaper articles in the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, Belgium and Finland. He has also made a number of appearances on both the TV and radio (for example BBC radio, Canadian Television, Irish and Italian radio and he has recently appeared in a Swedish TV documentary (SVT) which focused on employment relations in the international fast-food industry. In addition he has been invited to give over 30 guest lectures at other universities and other international institutions including for example: the Berlin Social Science Research Centre (WZB); the London School of Economics; and the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies (University of London); the Centre for Workplace Studies, Wayne State University, Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo and the British TUC and the Irish labour Relations Commission. He has also given plenary papers at prestigious international conferences such as the Marco Biagi Foundation Conference, University of Modena, the British Universities Industrial Association Conference and the Irish Academy of Management.

External Appointments
He has held a number visiting appointments including Visiting Professor at the Marco Biagi Foundation, School for Advanced Studies in Comparative Industrial Relations and Labour Law, the University of Modena, the University of Keele and the University of Hertfordshire. He is also a member of the Marco Biagi Foundation’s International Scientific Doctoral Committee. He has also held a number of External Examiner and appointments for several British Universities at PhD level, masters and undergraduate levels (including for example the London School of Economics). He served two terms as a member of the Executive of the British Universities Industrial Relations Association until July 2009 and was for three years a member of the UK Economic and Social Research Council. He is also a member of the Executive Council of the Irish Association of Industrial Relations .

Editorial Boards, Journal and Conference Referee
Dr Royle is currently a member of four editorial boards including the Work, Employment and Society, the Industrial Relations Journal, the Irish Journal of Management and the Anadolu Journal of Social Sciences. He regularly acts as a referee for a wide range of international journals such as the British Journal of Industrial Relations, Industrial Relations (Berkeley), Human Relations, European Journal of Industrial Relations, Personnel Review, Industrial Relations Journal, Economic and Industrial Democracy, International Journal of HRM, Employee Relations, Comparative Labor Law and Policy Journal and the International Journal of Comparative Labour Law and Industrial Relations, Journal of International Management and Work, Employment and Society. He regularly provides book reviews for a range of similar journals. He has acted as track chair and conference referee for a number of prestigious international conferences (such as the International Labour Process Conference; Work, Employment and Society Conference; the BUIRA Conference and the Irish Academy of Management Conference.
