Biography

Patricia McHugh, PhD is a Sea Change Social Innovation Postdoctoral Researcher with the Whitaker Institute at NUI Galway. Patricia holds a PhD on the Development and Measurement of Process Indicators for Science Communication using Social Marketing and Innovation Theory. Patricia's doctoral research was made possible due to the generous support of the Whitaker Institute and PRTLI4 funding in Ireland.

Since the completion of her PhD, Patricia’s indicator measurements have now been tested at a European level, measuring the progress of behaviours and actions in Sea for Society, a FP7 European funded project, within an EU marine context.

Her current work involves designing, training, and implementing Social Innovation Participation Processes (SIPPs) within an Ocean Literacy context for Sea Change, a Horizon 2020 project. Patricia is also responsible for the design and coordination of a Collective Impact Assessment Framework to monitor and track the progress of SIPP behaviours and actions implemented over the lifetime of the project.

Patricia has also been involved in a number of other research projects within the area of health, investigating Healthy Co-Created Societies and Collective Health Options and Intelligence for a Citizen Empowered Society (CHOICES). Both pieces of research were carried out with safefood and their Operation Transformation community groups across Ireland.


Patricia is currently the Research Leader for SIPPs, Social Innovation Participation and Policy unit within the Whitaker Institute at NUI Galway, where she is researching new and innovative research methodologies for Social Innovation such as Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping, Collective Intelligence, Value Network Analysis and Idea Banks.

Patricia currently contributes to the MSc. Marketing Practice Programme in terms of teaching the Marketing Research & Strategy Module.

Since 2011, Patricia has delivered an annual Guest Lecture on ‘Market Research & Secondary Sources of Data’ to final year students of the Podiatry Discipline at NUI Galway.


Since 2012, Patricia has delivered an annual Guest Lecture on ‘Marketing Research’ to postgraduate students of the Huston School of Film & Digital Media at NUI Galway.

Since 2014, Patricia has been a Guest Speaker for the Social Marketing Module of the MSc. Marketing Programme.

In 2015, Patricia delivered a Guest Lecture on ‘Ethical Issues in Social Marketing’ to the postgraduate students of the Management MSc programmes at NUI Galway.
