Law and Taxation

Widen your Career Prospects

This distinctive degree provides students with the knowledge and skills for legal practice, taxation or both. Students will study law and business modules and specialise in taxation. There are strong career prospects for law graduates with taxation knowledge. Commercial law firms are expanding their expertise in taxation to respond to international markets and the growing demand for legal expertise to support global operations.

Complete the Modules required for the Legal Profession’s Entrance Exams

This programme is a full law degree that covers the modules required for the solicitor entrance exams in Ireland. Students who wish to qualify as a barrister will have the option of taking all additional modules required by the Honorable Society of King’s Inns.

Specialist Streams

In final year students can tailor their degree by choosing from the following specialist streams:

Exemptions in Professional Accountancy and Taxation Exams

Graduates may be eligible for exemptions from the Irish Taxation Institute and other similar professional awarding bodies. Students who opt for the specialist stream in accounting will have exemptions in the professional accountancy bodies’ exams, depending on the modules they choose.

Professional Work Placement or Study Abroad

In year 3 students can choose to complete professional work placement or study abroad. Professional Work Placement will give students the opportunity to work in law firms that specialise in taxation or firms with a tax department. Students who choose to study abroad can join one of our partner universities who teach through English.

*Caithfidh na mic léinn a dhéanann Teanga an Dlí seimeastar amháin ag staidéar ar champas Gaeltachta  Ollscoil na hÉireann Gaillimh ar an gCeathrú Rua agus seimeastar amháin eile ar shocrúchán oibre i dtimpeallacht lán-Ghaeilge.

Students who opt for Legal Irish will spend one semester studying at NUI Galway’s Gaeltacht campus in An Cheathrú Rua and one semester of professional work placement in an Irish-speaking environment.

 

Law (BCL), Criminology and Criminal Justice

Unique Law Degree

Students have the opportunity to combine the study of a full undergraduate law degree with specially developed modules in: 

  • criminology (the study of why people commit crime)
  • criminal justice (how a society prevents, detects, prosecutes and punishes)
  • human rights
Access to World Class Academics

Students will have access to world-class academics including our newly appointed Adjunct Professor Mr. Justice Peter Charleton, Judge of the Supreme Court.

Complete the Modules required for the Legal Profession’s Entrance Exams

Excellent Career Prospects

Graduates of the Law, Criminology and Criminal Justice programme will be well prepared to work in policy or practice in the fields of criminal law, criminal justice and international human rights law.

Professional Work Placement or Study Abroad

In year 3 students can choose to complete professional work placement or study abroad. Professional Work Placement will give students the opportunity to work in firms with a substantial practice in criminal law, a statutory agency that has a criminal justice remit or national and international non-governmental organisations. Students who choose to study abroad can join one of our partner universities who teach through English.
