Research Cluster: International Law, Conflict and Migration

This research cluster will explore the relationship between international law, conflict and migration.  It will bring together two inter-related areas of research interest: international law and conflict, on the one hand, and migration, on the other.  In terms of the former, the research cluster will explore the relationship between international law and conflict, and the role of law and legal processes in addressing the conduct of participants in armed conflict. The cluster will draw on the fields of international humanitarian law, international criminal law, human rights and transitional justice. Indicative issues of interest will include civilian protection, peacekeeping, post-conflict prosecution and the role of truth commissions in addressing past conduct.  In terms of the latter, the research cluster will cover all aspects of international, regional and domestic immigration and refugee law, policy and practice.  It will examine the main themes associated with contemporary immigration and refugee law, such as voluntary and forced migration, regular and irregular migration, the tension between state sovereignty and human rights, so-called ‘crimmigration’, citizenship, statelessness, human trafficking, refugee status determination, mixed migration and environmental displacement.

Research Cluster: Labour, Business and Regulation

The Labour, Business and Regulation research cluster is based in the School of Law, and includes leading academics with an international reputation for excellence in critical scholarship, teaching and public engagement. Our work focuses on all aspects of labour and business, ranging from employment and business regulation, corporate governance and commercial practice, to international trade law, competition law and dispute resolution, including commercial mediation and international arbitration.

Current research themes include employee and consumer protection, workplace health and safety, intellectual property and biotechnology, mortgage regulation, the regulation of precarious work, and the impact of technology, particularly artificial intelligence and robotics, on labour markets, business practices and financial regulation. Members of the cluster are also engaged in research concerning international and national efforts aimed at addressing the responsibilities of business with respect to human rights.

Research Cluster: Equality, Rights and Social Inclusion

This cluster includes leading academics conducting research on the broad topic of equality, rights and social inclusion. The research addresses equality and discrimination across the grounds covered by equality legislation, with a particular focus on Disability and Gender. Equality is broadly conceived to focus in particular on inclusion and the capacity of people to participate in society.

Current research interests of the members include disability justice, intersectional discrimination, employment equality, the #MeToo movement, inclusive education, psychosocial disability and the use of the law in grassroots campaigns for social change.

Research Cluster: Law, Theory and Society

Socio-legal scholars and legal theorists understand the law as being embedded in social, political and ethical contexts, and believe that legal rules and principles must be studied and critiqued in these contexts. We are particularly concerned with the various ways in which law is socially and historically constructed, with how law both reflects and impacts culture, and with how inequalities are reinforced through differential access to, and competence with, legal procedures and institutions.  Accordingly, we adopt an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on social science, philosophy and political theory in particular, in examining the law and legal structures.
