Biography

Ioanna Tourkochoriti is a legal scholar working in the field of philosophy of law, political and moral philosophy on issues of human rights and constitutional law from a comparative perspective.

Before joining the Law Faculty at NUI Galway she held for eight years research and Faculty appointments at Harvard University. She was a Wertheim Fellow at the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School and a Lecturer on Law and Social Studies at the Committee on Degrees in Social Studies at Harvard University. She was also a Visiting Professor at the Department of Law at Carleton University, Canada.

She received her PhD (in Law) from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales - Paris, France. Her dissertation was awarded the Highest Academic Distinction. She received a Masters in Political Philosophy from EHESS - Paris, and an L.L.M. in Public Law from Université Panthéon-Assas, Paris II, France. She holds an L.L.B. in Law (4 year law degree) from Athens Law School, Greece. She has received a number of Fellowships and honors from the Greek State and the European Union.

She is the author of the book "The Revolutionary Roots of Free Speech: The Philosophical Foundations of the Divide between France and the USA" (under review). The book analyses the understanding of liberty and of the role of the government in France and the US since the American and the French revolutions. It presents the philosophical foundations of this role in the relevant debates.
She argues that the difference in the understanding of the role of the government affects the understanding of all legal actors in defining the content and the limits of liberty and in balancing liberties in conflict. She is also the author of scholarly publications on freedom of expression, freedom of religion, harm to self, human dignity, postmodernism and the law, as well as on issues of discrimination on the grounds of religion and disability. Her paper on the Burka Ban comparing freedom of religion in France and the US has been downloaded more than 7,940 times: http://scholarship.law.wm.edu/wmborj/vol20/iss3/4/. She is currently working on a project on the concept of human dignity and on a comparison of US and EU Employment Discrimination Law.

She has lectured at numerous Universities all around the world. While at Harvard University, she taught courses on human rights from a comparative and international perspective, philosophy of law, social and political theory and she received several Teaching Excellence Awards. She has also taught at the University of South Carolina (Comparative Law) and at the Law Department of Carleton University, Canada (Equality-Discrimination).

Apart from being a legal theorist she has also practical experience as a lawyer. She has handled human rights cases at the European Court of Human Rights and has served as an Investigator with the Human Rights Division of the Greek Ombudsman.

At NUIG she is a member of the Gender ARC (Advanced Research Consortium on Gender, Culture and the Knowledge Society) and she participates in The Gender and Public Policy (GPP) research group. Among other academic activities, she is a Member of the Board of the Younger Comparativists Committee of the American Society of Comparative Law, a member of the Board of Editors of the American Journal of Comparative Law and a member of the Social Sciences Outreach Group of the American Society of Comparative Law.
