Psychometric tests and assessment centres

Tests can be used by employers as part of the recruitment process. These can be either online in your own time in order to shortlist candidates for interview, or as part of an assessment centre (which usually includes a first round interview as well as other activities).

Typically these include sections on verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning, but may also include spatial reasoning, technical skills. give an overview of the different types on their website.

There are many websites with free sample tests online (and many more that charge a fee). The free ones may only have a short series of questions but the practice really does help you prepare for taking the test. A small selection of these are: have some samples under 'Advice Centre' 
Graduate Benchmark by Gradireland consists of three tests: numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning and inductive reasoning. After you've completed each test, you'll receive a personalised report showing how you did compared to your peers who have also taken the test.

We have a range of books available to reference in Careers covering the main tests mentioned above. Grab a pen and paper and take some time to try the sample tests before checking your score - practice makes perfect, but remember the tests each employer uses will be a bit different!
