Careers education can be defined as ' those formal processes that empower individuals to identify, develop and articulate the skills, qualifications, experiences, attributes and knowledge that will enable them to make an effective transition into their chosen futures, and manage their careers as lifelong learners, with a realistic and positive attitude'
(a) The Career Development Centre runs accredited courses in conjunction with departments focusing on:
Full modules include class contact (workshops and seminars where student participation is required) and an additional period for independent study by students. Careers Education modules should ideally be fully assessed, accredited and certified. Modules can also be adapted to meet particular needs or circumstances of individual departments e.g. where students need preparation or employability skills for a work placement.
(b) Non-accredited careers education seminars, called Focus for Success, are two-hours in duration and tailored to meet the career management needs of a particular group and their academic schedule. Typical content areas include self-awareness (such as personality and motivators), opportunity awareness, decision-making skills and making successful applications for jobs and courses.

Learning Skills are also a component of Career Education. These skills are needed to accompany academic work e.g. research, essay writing, time management and exam strategies. The Student Services Department and the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CELT) have resources to assist academic staff with learning skills.
Career Seminars are generally one or two hour seminars on career related issues.
Seminars aim to give students the opportunity to learn about career options related to the career area or subject, day-to-day activities of particular occupations, related education and training options and tips for entry.
Our experience has shown that co-operation and assistance of the department and / or student society is an essential ingredient in the success of such talks.
The format usually involves four or five speakers who each give a brief presentation on the careers and/or courses associated with a specific career area and / or subject e.g. Media, Biochemistry, Economics. Speakers are usually alumni, representatives of a relevant association or profession, Career Development Centre staff and / or postgraduate course directors. Short informal presentations are followed by a question-and-answer session. Most presenters remain available to speak to students after the event and this provides an opportunity to network and to gain additional information.
Seminars / talks usually take place in the evening, and are jointly run by the Career Development Centre and individual departments. All students are welcome, unless an invitation is extended exclusively to a group of students e.g. by a department or student society.
CV and Interview Preparation Seminars are held during term at 6.30 p.m. Run by the Career Development Centre for final year or postgraduate students, these seminars are facilitated by HR professionals from relevant areas, under the direction of Career Development Centre staff. Students can sign up through CAREERS CONNECT.
