| Transferable skills are skills that are developed in one situation, college for example that can be transferred to another situation such as employment. It is important that students are aware of the skills that they have acquired throughout their time in college and are able to transfer these to their research or future employment. Examples of these include teamwork, presentation skills and report writing skills. A recent survey carried out by the career devlopment centre on employers who attended the annual NUI Galway recruitment fair outlined that employers rate transferable skills as the third most important factor in graduate recruitment.
In many cases great work is currently being done to integrate skills into modules but the importance of this skill development needs to be outlined explicitly to students so that they are aware of the impact this skill development can have on their future employability. |
