What is a Graduate Job Programme?
First and foremost it is a REAL job & you get paid!
You will be an employee of the company and expected to make an immediate contribution to the team. You will not be photocopying, making the coffee or delivering the post (unless asked to do so by the CEO!)
Graduate job programme offers new graduates with little or no experience a fantastic opportunity to get that first step on the career ladder. It gives you the opportunity to gain amazing experience across a range of business functions (e.g. Sales & Marketing, Engineering, Science, R&D, Manufacturing etc...) while all the time developing and enhancing your skills. Many programmes are project-based with key objectives and expectations outlined at the beginning.
Some organisations may offer you a full-time position at the end of your graduate contract - so keep this in mind and perform your job to the best of your ability at all times.
Graduate job programmes are unique to each employer - all offering you something different! The key areas that differ amongst employers are the duration of programmes, rotations available, training & development, levels of responsibility, travel, benefits + others.
Do your research and make sure you choose the graduate employer that is right for you!
The listing below (although comprehensive) does not list every graduate job programme available. It is an excellent starting point to help you identify what organisations actually offer a graduate job programme.
We have organised it by sector to help you in your search. However, don't limit your search to just the sector/discipline that interests you as 50% of graduate employers recruit students and graduates from all disciplines and you don't want to miss out on the perfect opportunity for you...
Closing dates and application procedures vary between employers so keep a regular eye on this page to see what's new in!
Differences between a Graduate Job Programme and a Graduate Job
The key difference is for a graduate job you will be hired to do a specific job with specific duties & responsibilities (e.g. Software Developer, Civil Engineer, Accountant). With a Graduate Job Programme (as above) you will gain experience across a range of business functions.
For example an employer may recruit graduates from all disciplines for their graduate job programme and have a defined closing date and application process but they may also recruit graduates for specific positions on an ongoing basis.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both options - however, if you are not sure about what you want to do when you finish your degree and would like to try a few different areas, a graduate job programme could be perfect for you!
