Brief Outline:
Bayesian methods are at the forefront of advances in statistical signal processing and telecommunications, providing solutions that are matched to the nature of the actual data. These projects will provide students with research training at the exciting nexus between statistical signal processing, telecommunications, and probability modelling. One of our main challenges is to evolve tractable on-line algorithms in computationally constrained environments. Our research on variational Bayesian filtering will lead to new designs for mobile digital receivers. Another focus is on minimizing the risk associated with our decisions in telecommunications resource allocation problems. Finally, we need to design robust Bayesian solutions in cases where there is significant model uncertainty, in order to cope with the wide classes of signal and channel that arise in modern telecommunications networks. We will develop mathematically sophisticated Bayesian nonparametric techniques for these problems, with the promise of more reliable system performance.

Energy, Engineering and Philosophy: North/South Postgraduate Scholarships. These scholarships are worth €15,000 (approx. Stg£12,750) each. Three of the scholarships will be in the area of energy and engineering, and will be co-sponsored by Universities Ireland and ESB. Two more will be in another area - arts (including philosophy), business, science and social science - and will be funded by Universities Ireland alone. These scholarships are open to all students currently registered at an Irish or a Northern Irish University or Dublin Institute of Technology (or who have graduated within the past five years) proposing to take up a place on a Master's or PhD programme which would require them to locate to the other irish jurisdiction. They are also open to currently registered students at an Irish or a Northern Irish University or Dublin Institute of Technology. (or who have graduated within the past five years) which to follow a cross-border Master's or the first year of a PhD programme involving a significant period of study in the other Irish jurisdiction. They are also open to Irish or Northern Irish-born students currently registered at a British University(or who have graduated within the past five years).
To be considered for this award, applicants will be required to write a short essay (1400-1500) explaining why they wish to study in the other Irish jurisdiction and how they believe their studies will enhance innovation for a prosperous and sustainable island in their chosen subject (for the energy and engineering scholarships); or understanding of all-island perspectives in their chosen subject (for the other scholarships).
The closing date for applications for this scholarships scheme will be Monday 16th May 2011 (5pm). The winning applicants will be selected by a high level panel comprising two university presidents (one from North, one from South) and a senior executive from ESB. Shortlising will take place in early-mid June.
Receipients of the scholarships will be required to furnish proof that they have been offered a place on a recognised Master's or PhD programme in the other Irish jurisdiction or on a cross-border Master's or PhD programme. The organisers reserve the right not to award the full number of scholarships if the standard of applications is insufficiently high.

Summary: The Ireland—Northern Ireland—National Cancer Institute Cancer Consortium aims to provide world-class cancer care to people on the island of Ireland and to this end, has developed a range of educational exchange programmes. As part of the 2011 Consortium activities, the Health Research Board now invites applications for Health Economics Fellowships in Cancer 2011.
What are the objectives of this Fellowship? This Fellowship programme aims to encourage successful applicants to pursue careers in health economics in the Republic of Ireland. The duration of the Fellowships is four years, leading to a PhD degree in health economics. The Fellowship includes training in health economics in cancer research in the UK and the USA followed by ten months of coursework in health economics, cancer prevention and health policy, based mainly in Ireland, then two years of mentored research at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Washington DC and a final year of mentored research at an affiliated host institution in the Republic of Ireland.
Who should apply? Applications are invited from graduates and researchers with a primary degree in a relevant discipline, such as epidemiology, (bio)statistics or economics. Applicants with degrees in medicine, pharmacy, health services research, social sciences or other sciences will also be considered. Previous training or experience in health economics would be beneficial, but is not essential. Applicants must be eligible for a J1 visa to work in the US. Applicants must have worked or trained in the Republic of Ireland within the past 12 months.
When is the proposed start date? Successful applicants will begin their Fellowship in June 2011.
What does the Fellowship include? The Health Research Board (HRB) will provide for a PhD stipend of €16,000 per annum for four years, a contribution towards student registration fees, costs associated with travel and the cost of health insurance for the duration of the fellow’s stay in the US. Funds will be provided to enable the fellow to attend one relevant scientific meeting per year of research.
What is the DEADLINE for applications? Wednesday, 5 January 2011 at 12 noon.
Where can I get more information about this programme? Further detailed information is available online. Applications must be made using the HRB eGrants system.
