Psychometric Tests

The term "psychometric test" can be used to mean two different types of tests:

1. tests for people who want to explore their own strengths and interests.
2. tests for employers as part of the recruitment process. 

1. Personal (psychometric, aptitude, interest tests):

Psychometric tests aim to measure attributes like ability, personality and motivation. These self-assessment tools can help your career development e.g., assist you to figure out what careers might suit you.

There are also some online tests available - the following tend to use the tests to help you explore your interests, strengths, abilities and personality:

The gradireland Careers Report Reveal your strengths and skills, pinpoint graduate jobs and careers that suit you, and set you on a positive plan of action. Particularly suited to higher level students and graduates.

Career Directions a career interest assessment tool together with a careers database of 700+ career profiles. The career assessment tool allows Users to match their own interests and qualifications to suitable careers. Particularly suitable for second level students or those early on in third level.

Prospects Career Planner  identifies your skills, motivations and desires for your job role from the information you provide, and matches them to occupations and current opportunities.

2. Practice employer tests (verbal reasoning, numerical, spatial)

Can be used by employers as part of the recruitment process to help shortlist candidates for interview.
Typically these include sections on verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning, but may also include spatial reasoning, technical skills.  Targetjobs.co.uk give an overview of the different types on their website.

According to SHL " Ability tests are proven methods for assessing critical qualities for job success such as solving problems, communicating effectively as well as innovation and creativity. It’s for these reasons that employers use such tests widely."

We have a range of books available to reference in Careers covering all the main tests mentioned above. Grab a pen and paper and take some time to try the sample tests before checking your score - practice makes perfect, but remember the tests each employer uses will be a bit different!

There are also plenty of websites with free sample tests online (and plenty more that charge a fee). The free ones may only have a short series of questions but the practice really does help you prepare for taking the test. Some of these are:

European Personnel Selection Office samples of tests used by the EU institutions in their recruitment campaigns

Morrisby examples of Morrisby tests

eFinancialCareers Numerical Tests practice numerical tests similar to those used by professional finance companies during interviews and training

SHL some practice tests including verbal, numerical, inductive reasoning, IT and more.
